Exciting March for Our Lives

I have been so impressed by the teenage survivors of the mass school shooting at Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida. It is hard to imagine that within five weeks after the mass shooting at their school, these teens were able to put together an international March for Our Lives, including attracting hundreds of thousands of marchers to Washington, D.C. My husband and I decided we had to participate in the March for Our Lives in Irvine, California. We have two daughters who are teachers, seven grandchildren, and another grandchild on the way. We could not imagine how awful it would be for something to happen to one of them. We cannot imagine how hard it has been for the parents who lost children. Katie Porter, the candidate we support to replace Mimi Walters, was also at the March for Our Lives in Irvine. It was great to see her there and support both her and a cause which is important to us. That is a photo of her, speaking to hundreds of people at the Irvine March. After it was over, she and other members of her campaign went to another March in our district. She's been a very busy candidate! There were members of the NRA at the Irvine march, too. Exactly TWO members of the NRA stood along the side and smiled. They were completely non-confrontational. I guess they figured they were outnumbered, so they might as well just enjoy the day. Are there issues which would inspire you to march?

My daughter wanted to march, so I was going to go with her, but we were both taking a CPR class at the time of the local march in our community. We did get to see some of the march after our class ended, as we were driving on the road where they were marching to our downtown community plaza. We honked and waved at all the people as we went by. We tried to head downtown to park and join everyone at the downtown place, but the police had all the roads blocked off, so we ended up just heading home. Up until this point, my daughter (she's 18) has been very apathetic towards politics, but this really got her engaged. I'm glad to see her standing up for what she feels is right.

@DeborahDiane My daughter participated in their walkout at their school on March 14th. She said all the teachers and administrators walked out with them in support. Glad to see my kids getting involved in changing the world.

@DeborahDiane In general, I have very little hope for future generations, but every now and then they surprise me. Unfortunately, it only seems to be when some calamity strikes. I wish they would step up and take charge and be engaged and innovated when times are good as well as when times are bad.

@moffittjc - We enjoyed having cars honk at us, so you and your daughter did your part to support the movement. My 17 year-old granddaughter who has been very apathetic about politics was also excited about these events. She didn't march this weekend because of some conflicts, but she did march with other students at her school on the 14th. I guess being the generation where school shootings have become normal has had an impact on them. I hope your CPR class went well!

I'd march for you know who's impeachment. He's in town this weekend and Melania will remain with their son for the week. My granddaughter and her mom marched in NYC today.

@DianneN - Yes, the possibility of impeachment would get me out again, too! I'm glad your granddaughter and her mom marched in NYC. Good for them!

@DianneN - My husband has NEVER marched with me in the past, so this movement has really struck a chord with him. He said he could not imagine losing one of our daughters or grandkids. I was proud of him for marching with me.

@Tampa_girl7 - I hope these marches make a difference, too. If it doesn't, we'll just have to vote out the candidates who won't make reasonable changes to the law. I have been impressed with the young people.

I wish I could have joined this march. Alas, I'm held up with a broken ankle at the moment, so I will have to extend my support from my bed. Good for you and your husband for marching, though! This is definitely a cause I support. Enough is enough.

@Srbageldog - I can understand why a broken ankle would slow you down! I'm glad you support this cause and I hope the candidates you vote for this year, and in the future, reflect that support! The most important thing you can do is VOTE!

Its good to note so many patriots all gathered for the common good. I'd get out and march for the rights of the visually impaired to work, and I mean working in a decent paying job just like everyone else, not just working in a pity job.

@sallypup - That would be a very good reason to march. I think a lot of people deserve to have decent paying jobs, including those who are physically handicapped or visually impaired. It breaks my heart when I volunteer at the homeless shelter and realize that some of these people are homeless because they cannot find decent paying jobs.

Sigh. No. I have devoted my life to a cause. But some marchers make a mockery of my cause. I am upset.

@TheHorse - What is your cause? How has it been mocked? You have me curious, now!
