Volunteer Work

Here in Australia, volunteering is very much a part of the social and economic structure of the country. Most charities would not be able to survive if it were not for the many volunteers who selflessly give of their time and effort. The charity I work for has 4 part-time paid staff, with hours ranging from 4 a week (me) to 20 a week. We also have a floating population of around 12 to 15 volunteers. Many of these are students who are doing Social Work or Mental Health degrees and need placement hours as part of their courses, but others volunteer simply because they believe in what we are doing. Those of us who have some paid hours also often put in extra, unpaid time. Is volunteering big where you are? Do you do any volunteer work?

I think here the volunteering issues is a beginning. My son is a volunteer in a library. Since he is still a grade 8 student, so he will book a time in advance if he needs to work there. In his age, he can't join the zoo or museum volunteering job yet. How disappointing!

Time will pass quickly and he will be able to do those jobs that he is not qualified for yet.

Yes it is big here but I have been volunteering since I was a young child and in a different part of the world. I still do today.

That is awesome. I dont think its nearly as popular here but more people should do it. I think for a lot of people their employers or school make them. Which is good because charities need the help but it would be nice if more people did it for more altruistic reasons.

We don't do any 'regular' volunteering but we often find ourselves helping out at some thing or another. Certainly many, many Australians spend a lot of their time working as volunteers.
