I guess everyone shops on Good Friday?

All the kids were home from school today, but the other half works a closing shift tonight. I took the opportunity to (finally!) get the rest of the things I needed for this weekend's Easter baskets and Easter dinner. I went to Dollar Tree, Target, and Safeway. Dollar Tree had a surprising amount of Easter stuff left, although they didn't have the rose gold unicorn jewelry holders I was hoping to find. They did have 1 lb bags of frozen hash browns in their freezer section, which was both a surprise and something that I needed for this weekend. There was a massive amount of people in the store considering it was 10 o'clock in the morning. It took me an hour to get in and out of there! Target was out of cream cheese, hams, sour cream, ALL of the eggs (not just the white ones), but still had lots of Easter candy (including Peeps lollipops, which is something I hoped to find). I had a coupon that would give me a $10 gift card when I bought $50 worth of groceries, but I wasn't able to take advantage of that since they were out of most of the things I needed. I bought 2 spiral sliced hams at Safeway, plus pineapple, the rest of my funeral potatoes ingredients, asparagus, a bagged salad mix, and the butter that was on sale. While in line, I remembered that I still needed white eggs! When I got closer to the front of the line, I put all of my items on the belt, told the cashier that I was running to grab eggs, and high tailed it to the egg shelf and back. They were on sale for a good price, but still 3 times higher than they were supposed to have been at Target... but that's probably why Target was completely out of eggs. I ended up being out of the house for over 3 hours, which is not what I planned.

Stores and businesses are not open here on Good Friday. There were a few fish and chips places open, but that was it.

@spiderdust Yes, everything shuts down here out of respect for Good Friday. Except for churches, they are all open and holding special services.

That's what someone else from Canada mentioned. I'm not sure if we get mail today or not.

@Juliaacv I would be surprised if churches were closed on religious holidays!

The only places that are open on Good Friday in my part of the world are convenience stores and pharmacies. All of the malls are closed until Saturday. :-)

Were the people who settled Canada Catholics?

@TheHorse There are a good many in Canada who have Irish, Scottish and English ancestry. The first Prime Minister was a Scotsman. I would classify that as prominently Catholic, Anglican and Protestant.. And lets not forget those of French ancestry. :-)

I expected it to be insane crazy while I was out today but it really wasn't to bad and the shelves were fully stocked. Sorry to hear it was so bad when you went out today. I guess I got really lucky!

@spiderdust 1pm-5pm I tried to be out while others were at work so the stores wouldn't be as crowded. Which seemed the case but I was surprised everywhere I went the shelves were stocked. I was dreading shopping figuring all the candy would be gone and I would like have to go a million stores trying to find some.

@shaggin I was surprised at how much candy was available. At Target, they were putting a lot more stuff out too.

I can remember when all the shops were closed on Good Friday but now it's just a normal day. I didn't shop because I am trying to cut back a bit and I always spend far more than I mean to.

@spiderdust In the UK we used to have a half day closing on a Wednesday so all the shops were closed and absolutely no one would open on a Sunday. I can't remember when that stopped but I it was somewhere around the 1970s I think. Half day closing was required by law under the shop acts to stop staff getting stressed! . How different it is now.

@sprite1950 It really is. I think some of it also has to do with the religious composition of the countries changing.

It seems like the stores around here now think holiday = day to have sales to get people shopping.

@spiderdust I wonder if my Trader Joe's would be all crowded tonight. I don't think I have to go and check, though.

We went grocery shopping on Thursday, I know that Good Friday is too crowded, with all the tourists coming from the north.

I think I'll spend tomorrow cleaning (or getting the kids to clean) and boiling eggs. Most of my Easter dinner stuff is pretty hands-off (with the exception of the deviled eggs, which someone else is in charge of making).

Today people who gets an SSI check were out and about spending money too, plus all that gets paid every 2 weeks and the 1st. being Sunday got paid, Then the weekly pay days. Town was so packed I could not get out of one plaza for 30 minutes, the red light was making it back up. It was bad here as well.

Here in Australia Good Friday is a public holiday, one of the very few days in the year when everything is closed.

There's very little in the United States that completely closes for holidays any more, although when I was little, many businesses were closed from Christmas Eve to January 2nd.
