Leonardo Wasn't THAT Smart

Every year during this time ol' Leonardo da Vinci comes to mind. If you know nada about art, you still know that Leonardo painted The Last Supper, considered one of the greatest works of the Renaissance. And if you know nothing else about Leonardo, you probably know that he was considered one of the greatest geniuses who ever lived. Looking at The Last Supper, I can only conclude that Leonardo wasn't that smart. The "last supper," as it is universally known in Christian circles, is described in the Bible as the Passover meal (commonly called the Seder). The first requirement of the Seder is to ensure there is no leaven in the house (as the commandment of Passover found in Exodus 12:19 declares). And yet, ol' Leonardo painted dinner rolls sitting on the table. Mona Lisa, schmona Lisa. He may have invented the parachute and the helicopter, but he wasn't all that smart! To paraphrase The Blues Brothers, this ain't no Nat "King" Cole song!

I would like to be half smart as he was. In the Last Supper he managed to synthesize all the information known about it and the betrayal of Judas in the gospels (7 passages). Tell me who does not commit a mistake times to times ? It happens to the best of us, even to you : David is a sculpture of Michelangelo, not of Leonardo.

So who stayed awake in art class? Thanks for pointing that out. I edited the discussion.

@FourWalls I had the luck to have seen both the fresco of the Last Supper in Milan and the David in Florence.

@FourWalls There are about 20 "Thinker" around the world, and you have perhaps one on them. All can be seen as originals, as they come from the same mould by Rodin. I do not know if the mould still exists, if yes it is probably property of the Rodin Museum in Paris. It is expensive but you can have a statue by Rodin at home, as they continue to use some of his moulds. I saw The Last Supper before (my first visit was in 1975) and after its restoration. The visitors cannot approach closely, and in 1975 the fresco was quite dark and some small pieces were lacking here and there. They did a good job on it, perhaps too good for some tastes, and I do not know how much of the original painting exists today. I cannot tell if it was coming from the stone or from its materials, but it had to be repainted several times.

I think he was a genius and the most super intelligent people make mistakes but he was one heck of a guy to be living in those times also. I agree with tops and I wish I was half as smart as what he was.

Geez, ya know Leonardo had some much on his plate what's a dinner roll among friendly art lovers, lol. The guy was involved in so many pursuits; invention, painting, sculpting, architecture, science, music, mathematics, engineering, literature, anatomy, geology, astronomy, botany, and writing we need to cut him some slack here...Besides, what's a big supper without dinner rolls

But at least he didn't paint it with three Christ's, like Michelangelo tried to do!
