Favorite "Color" Bands #4 - Black Sabbath

We're back in black today with #4 in my countdown of my favorite bands with a color in their name: the legendary Black Sabbath.
Here's all that you need to know about Black Sabbath: Over 70 million records sold worldwide. Members of both the Rock and Roll and UK Music Hall's of Fame. Two time Grammy Award winners.
Thank you. Goodnight!
Seriously, these heavy metal pioneer's (Classic lineup: vocalist Ozzy Osborne, guitarist Tony Iommi, bassist Geezer Butler, and drummer Bill Ward. Iommi has been the band's only constant member since they formed in 1968) developed, early on, a dark, heavy, sludgy sound that was unlike anything heard at the time. Over the years, many a band took notice and adapted parts of the Sabbath sound into their own (Type O Negative comes immediately to mind. Hell, even the Butthole Surfers' "Who was In My Room Last Night?" sounds like Black Sabbath on speed.)
After Ozzy was fired for drug and alcohol abuse in 1979, the band went through a succession of vocalists, including some top notch singers such as Ronnie James Dio, Ian Gillan, and Glenn Hughes. However, the group returned to their glory years in 1997, when they reunited with Osborne.
Over the decades, Black Sabbath has released 19 studio albums and 30 singles, with Iommi not ruling out future releases.
I've linked to one of my favorite songs from their 1971 album, Master of Reality. It was the first Sabbath album I ever owned. I was 12. Opened my eyes big time.

@amadeo - Yes, he still puts out records and tours. Even gets back with Black Sabbath once in awhile.

I really like Black Sabbath. When I was first getting interested in music (at age 40!) I was impressed with Iommi. On the day before their first tour he was working (in case the tour failed) in a shop and cut the tips off 3 finger of his fretting hand. He capped them and carried on with the tour--what character and determination! Plus, he just does things with that guitar that should be against the law, they are sooo good!
However, he doesn't compare to my favorite, David Gilmour. They are both exceptional players with different styles and ways of expressing themselves. I have to say Pink Floyd is my very favorite band and if I had no other music but theirs to listen to for the rest of my life it would not be unbearable.

He had to come up with a totally unique method of playing because of that.
Pink Floyd also made this countdown. #7.

I saw them for their final tour a couple of years ago while hugely pregnant.
You have, of course, heard Type O Negative's cover of the song "Black Sabbath"? In typical Type O Negative style, it's very, very slowed down.

@teamfreak16 I saw Type O back in 1995 when they opened up for Queensryche, and again in 1997 when they were the headliner with Stuck Mojo and Drain STH opening for them.

Very interesting read. Not a big metal fan but I do like a few of Ozzy's solo efforts.

What amazes me is that Ozzy can even remember lyrics.
