The Day From Heck, Part One

As the Mark Chesnutt song says, "It sure is Monday." Yesterday was so Monday that it ought to go into the Monday Hall of Fame. In fact, yesterday's Monday was so Monday that I have to break it up into two parts. First, the window. I have double-pane windows in my house, and the outer pane of one of the windows is broken in the upper sash. I called a well-advertised business to get an appointment for an estimate on getting the sash replaced on April 2. Their "quick service" meant an appointment a week later. The time was set up between 2 and 6 PM. At 1:15 they called and asked if they could come right over. I told them I was at lunch but I could be home right at 2 PM. Fine, they said. On the way home they called again and said they'd gone to another job and would get me next. Sure, no problem. My fault for not being home an hour before we'd arranged, right? Six PM comes and goes. And 7:00. And 8:00. And it's now 10 AM the next day. No phone call. No show. No, "Oh, gee, we're sorry." I'm glad they're that financially stable and they don't need my money. In hindsight, after I calmed down I realized they probably did me a favor. I read some reviews online, and apparently they have a "glowing reputation" for stunts such as this: not showing, not calling to reschedule (hey, it's my broken window, not theirs), and taking forever to repair the windows...often with shoddy workmanship. So I shouldn't use them, and their no-show just confirmed that. But I still have a broken window, and I've lost a week toward getting it fixed. Oh, you knew this song was coming, didn't you:

I have come across this type of thing before. Good to know they have so much business they can't treat customers poorly.

I guess you can blame the economy: they need "bodies to fill the position," not actual workers.

I agree with what @JudyEv said: they have a skill and we need them, so they can treat us however they like. There aren't a lot of places that do window repair -- just replacement -- so the companies that do perform that service are at a premium. Robert Klein, the comedian, had a line about it being "supply and demand: we have all the supply, so we can demand whatever we want."

I stopped by Home Depot and set up an appointment with them. I'll call a couple of other places on Thursday as well.

I don't know what it is with tradespeople - why they can't get back to you if there is a problem
