In 1987 the biggest song was one I really like because it was a sort of fun song “Walk Like an Egyptian” by The Bangles. The song got on the Billboard Hot 100 and stayed there for four weeks. It was the number one song of this year. It was on their third album Different Light. The song became a million-selling single.
The Song of the Year was “That’s What Friends Are For” by Dionne Warwick & Friends. It won the Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal. The song was written by Burt Bacharach and Carol Bayer Sager. It was first recorded by Rod Stewart for the soundtrack of the movie “Night Shift” in 1982. However, it is best remembered for the cover version sung by Dionne Warwick, Elton John, Gladys Knight and Stevie Wonder. It was released as a charity single for AIDS research and prevention. It was a number one hit in 1986. Sales of this song got more than $3 million for the cause.
The best song of this year was “I Wanna Dance With Somebody (That Loves Me)” by Whitney Houston. It was the first single from her second studio album Whitney. The original arrangement was written for her grandnephew who at the age of nine was a well-renowned dancer. It won the Grammy Award for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance.
