Things I miss from my childhood

A little while ago I responded to a discussion about whether we would like to live in another century. I really believe we live at the best time in history, but it did set me thinking. Great as the 21st century is, there are a few things I miss from my childhood in the middle of the 20th century: * Milk in bottles on the doorstep first thing in the morning, and particularly the thick layer of cream at the top (no homogenized milk in those days.) * The baker who delivered loaves with thick, crunchy crusts; and his horse that clip-clopped quietly along the street without needing a driver, while the baker ran in and out of the houses. * The postie who blew a whistle when he delivered mail. * Saturday matinee at the movies, where there were TWO movies plus cartoons and shorts. * The freedom to wander all day unsupervised, without parents needing to be at all worried about our safety. * New Year's Eve dances, where everyone from kids to grandparents would dance away the old year and sing in the new one with Auld Lang Sine.
