Cast Is Off, But Now I Get "The Boot"

Earlier today I got my cast removed, six weeks after fracturing my ankle in two different places. I got sent for x-rays afterwards, and the orthopedist called me in the afternoon to let me know if it was all healed or not. Alas, he can still see the fracture line on my ankle, so he decided to have me wear a "walking boot" for the next 2 weeks. He said I can still use the crutches as needed, but gradually should be able to put weight on that foot and walk on it. His assistant was supposed to call me back an hour later with instructions for getting fitted for the boot, but she never did end up calling today. I ended up dozing off while waiting for her to call, and by the time I woke up it was after 5 p.m., and they were out of the office. I will call in the morning to find out what to do next. I wish she would have followed up today, though, as my boyfriend took the day off work to take me to my appointment, and tomorrow he won't be around to drive me to get fitted for my boot. So I will probably have to wait until Thursday or Friday to go get it, as I still require help getting up and down the stairs. So for now I'm still using the crutches, and trying to do some range of motion exercises to loosen up my foot. It's still a bit swollen and is very painful. The bottom of my foot is absolutely disgusting. The skin is all dried, cracked, and peeling. It has never looked like that before. I don't know if that's just from being in the cast or if I caught athlete's foot and the cast made it worse. I am going to have a fun time trying to get my poor, nasty foot back to normal. The skin on that leg is really dry, too, especially around the ankle that's fractured. Nobody warned me that might happen. Again, not sure if that's normal or not. Hopefully now that I can wash it and put lotion on it, it'll get better. Now, to try to keep Lister off of it for the next two weeks...

Well that stinks that she didn't do her job and call you. Just don't put to much weight on it. Sorry it didn't heal totally. I wonder why some don't and others do in that time frame. Probably because you kept beating the poor thing against things! . Hopefully you can get in to get the boot and then it will heal all the way.

@Srbageldog Oh my what a pain to get that boot! I'm always amazed how they can act and not do their jobs right and yet they still have a job! I'm glad even with all the problems you got it. Now just be careful!!

@Ithink Yes, it most certainly was a pain! At least I got it, though. And while I was waiting to be fitted for it, I was grateful that my ankle is just fractured and that I still have my leg. The clinic that dispenses the boots also provides prosthetic legs (and other body parts) for people who have lost limbs. There were men waiting who were missing legs...really puts my injury into perspective. I will be careful! The last thing I need is to break something else.

I ended up having to call the doctor's clinic FOUR TIMES this afternoon until they finally put me through to her...the stupid receptionists kept giving me the runaround! Gave me the wrong number to a pharmacy to call about my boot...then gave me a different number, then it turned out that pharmacy doesn't even dispense those boots! So called back the clinic, was given info for the correct place, called them and they said they hadn't received any orders for the boot! Had to call back to the clinic AGAIN and the receptionist tried to tell me to call that first pharmacy, and that's when I put on my witch's hat and demanded to speak to the orthopedist or his assistant. I had already asked to be put through to them several times and they wouldn't! FINALLY got transferred to the assistant, who claimed she'd faxed the info over this morning but would do it again since they claimed they hadn't received it...and also apologized for that pharmacy's number being noted in my file, as someone "upstairs" gave her the wrong patient information. Just...UGH! I was so annoyed. I am usually very nice and polite when I call, but after all that nonsense I was fed up! Anyway, I get my boot tomorrow morning. LOL After all that hassle, it better be worth it!

Me too. Oh, gawd, it was such a hassle getting her on the phone and getting the correct info for getting my boot! I was on my last nerve and ended up raising my voice to the last receptionist I spoke to...I shouldn't have to spend an hour on the phone calling all kinds of different places just to get info that was supposed to be relayed to me by her over the phone yesterday!

I am sorry nobody warned you, YES it's normal, the skin of my arm was very dry when the cast went off. It also takes a bit of time before you can move again as you did before. Be patient, it's normal.

Good to know. My foot looks better today, thankfully, but it will be a while before it's back to normal I suppose.
