I think we have a winner in today's Play it Again, Sam, a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song. Let me rephrase that. I know we have a winner today. We are at #33a: "Shapes of Things" by The Yardbirds. A psychedelic classic, The Yardbirds' 1966 hit, "Shapes of Things" came about because of, according to guitarist Jeff Beck, the band's desire to do "something modern and exciting." Beck had been experimenting with feedback, and the group took a bass riff from an old jazz record and ran with it. While drummer Jim McCarty, vocalist Keith Relf, and bassist Paul Samwell-Smith are credited as songwriters, McCarty has expressed regret that Beck did not receive a songwriting credit for his contribution. The "modern and exciting" single was a big hit, reaching #3 in the band's native UK, #11 on the Billboard Hot 100, #7 in Canada, and #22 in Germany.
