Fast Lane/ Passing Lane Safety

We moved from Texas to California and I deeply HATE that the far-left lane isn't used for its intended purpose. In Texas, the "fast lane" is used only to pass. In California, it's where slow people chose to drive the entire time. I mean people that drive 40mph... they should drive in the right lanes. This prevents traffic from building up and it's safer for everyone, no? Why do slow people keep cruising in the far-left lane? I'm trying to figure out their reasoning other than just selfishness

Because you don't live in a state with lane restrictions. Just because you grew used to the law where you lived previously doesn't mean the same law applies now.

I've lived in many states in the US and other countries... I can tell you that it's much safer to drive in states with "lane restrictions" and traffic moves faster. People don't get offended if you need to pass them because some people don't need to drive that far and rather stay under the speed-limit. That's fine. I'm not debating laws in different states. Regardless of where you live, cruising in the "fast lane" is just rude, especially when there are other people passing you on the right. It prevents others from having to avoid yet another obstacle on the road and weaving around other vehicles just to pass one person.

@aneekebeth You miss the point that if they are going slower than everyone else, they are going to have to be passed regardless of what lane they are in. Yes, it can be irritating. Myself, if I see someone coming up faster behind me, I move over. But in California (and some other places as well) they aren't breaking the law. LIFE is irritating. I'm more irritated by idiots talking on their phones as they pass people on the highway.

I think those on and off ramps in Texas are crazy where you if you miss the confusing turn lane into a shopping area you have to circle all the way around from one side of the freeway to the other.

It is just simply that they are idiots who have no idea how the rules of the road work. It drives me insane. What's worse is that we ALL KNOW that you are allowed to do 5 over the speed limit. So when you are in the left lane at 70mph, and you are actually doing 70...this is not right. You can do 75. I have gone past cop after cop after cop at 5 over and have never been pulled over. What's WORSE is when these idiots see cops and slam on their brakes. Ugh.
