From Smallville To Sex Trafficking Cult Recruitment

I was a fan of the Smallville TV series, about the adventures of Clark Kent, aka, Superman, or rather Superboy. One actress from the series has now been arrested for having a very high profile part in recruiting for the sinister ex-ring cult, NXIVM. Allison Mack played Chloe Sullivan, specially created for the series, a junior reporter and cousin to Lois Lane. Only the lead actor, Tom Welling appeared in more episodes over the show’s ten seasons. Aside from a few sit-com appearances Mack hasn’t worked much since the series ended, but she was reported to have been recruited to a pyramid selling organization called NXIVM. Kristen Kruek, who played Lana Lang in Smallville was also recruited. Kruek claims that she left the group in 2012. Though promoted as teaching inspirational business coaching, NXIVM was criticised as using cult-like brainwashing on its recruits and course participants. Clients have included Richard Branson and Dynasty actress Linda Evans (allegedly). Though founded in 1998, NXIVM (pronounced Nexium) was from 2003 onwards accused of being a cult. Claims made from 2014 onwards included assertions that women were stripped naked and branded with cauterizing pens with the initials of the founder and leader, Keith Raniere, usually referred to as Vanguard.. Some courses ran over seventeen hours a day and sixteen days. Women joining the group were allegedly obliged to supply nude photos of themselves, to be released and circulated if the women broke the NXIVM non-disclosure agreements on what they do in the organization activities. High profile media exposes led to Raniere being arrested two months ago. (March 2018). Charges extended as far as alleged sex-trafficking. In April, Alison Mack was arrested too, as she is seen as second in command to Raniere, and responsible for actively blackmailing and intimidating female recruits to get them to do the NXIVM leader’s bidding. Mack is out on a $5 million bail bond and expected to go to trial in October. I hope the truth will come out through the trial. Whether Mack herself is a free agent in the NXIVM movement or a brainwashed pawn in her own right will make a huge difference in whether she has any future outside of prison for many years to come. I do hope the NXIVM organization is put out of business by the events unfolding. This is a situation where Superman cannot help Allison Mack. Her freedom hangs very much in the balance. @amadeo the series started off well but got silly and over-complicated later - the cult Mack is embroiled in is very dangerous

I read about that and it just makes me wonder why people get mixed in with things like this.

@Ithink all too easily. People looking for a change of direction and in a state of uncertainty are very susceptible to recruitment

Is this for real? In the season of new technology, I cannot believe that people will still believe this kind of tactics. It must have been a promising scenario they presented to tjeir recruits

@rakski all too real sadly, such groups can be very convincing but fortunately the truth has surfaced in this case

I can't understand why people join cults and other weird movements.

@Kandae11 cults target people when we are at a low ebb and uncertain what to do next - the cult steps in offering meaning and direction, but it is often deceptive

Yeah, the whole cult thing. It's just weird to me. People allow themselves to be lead like sheep.
