When do you start counting down?

United States

It is eight weeks or 59 more days until my girls trip to the Diagon Alley event in Ohio. I've been checking the counter periodically but haven't really worried about it. I know that this next month will most likely fly by, and so will July. I am getting more and more excited as I prepare for the trip. I save a little bit of money every week, and every week I try to save more and more. Ideally, since this trip is so small, $250 each should be plenty to save. The accommodations are already paid for so it's just food, gas and little trinkets that need to be budgeted. When do you start counting down for a vacation? Do you try to save more money towards it the closer it gets?

Since I am more active on mylot, I'll be saving whatever I am able to cashout here towards the vacation. I'm hoping I can get a little over $8.00 from here. I won't aim for higher because I don't want to get burnt out. I've got my birthday at the first of July so I'll get a little money I am sure, and that will go a long way towards the goal as well.

If the family has its plans, we do prepare ahead of time. Indeed, money is also involved in budgeting things up.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I am sorry that. If I may ask, why you never had the chance traveling with the family?

@Shavkat Just family situation. We were poor. I did get to visit family in the mountains, but it was always a day trip.

We are all saving individually. One person will drive, and the other two will contribute to the gas needed for the trip. I've not had a family vacation with my actual family - ever. I mean, ever, ever.

I know, I just wish it was the end of July already. Of course the weekend (it's only a weekend trip) will go by so quickly. It will also be the longest I've been in a car. I think two and a half hours is the longest I've been in a car, and that was with a break. We will be traveling 8 hours, and I'm sure the break will be in the very middle.

@ScribbledAdNauseum You will need a couple of breaks. We drove to Florida from Connecticut many times and took our time.

Daigon Alley?! Has it to do with Harry Potter?
• United States

Exactly. A street in Kent, Ohio turns into Diagon Alley every summer. This is the first I've heard of it, and I am so so excited. I plan to eat, drink and buy lots of yummy foods. Then we plan to potentially go to the beach. We will meet up with a friend's family as well.

@nela13 Thank You. Were you aware that Harry Potter was heavily influenced by Portugal?

I have booked three flights for April 2019. These are Thailand to Malaysia to Japan to Hawaii in the USA. I am fed up with waiting for the other airline to have their airfares for this. I need flights from England to Thailand via Norway and flights from Oakland in the USA to England on that airline. I have already booked accommodation in Japan. I need to book on a different airline a flight from Hawaii to Oakland. I am saving money in July and onwards from there for this trip. Right now I am saving up for a new front door and re-decorating my bungalow. Nearer the time I will buy the foreign currency.

Where are you planning to fly internationally? On one trip on Easy Jet we booked Bristol to Bordeaux for a low price. We wanted to come fly from Perpignan to London Stansted however the price was around 400 Euros. I had budgeted £100 so we had to by a flight to Brussels Charleroi. We later bought Eurostar tickets from Brussels to London.

I've never had to deal with international travel and booking for things. I can imagine it would be a big headache and that finding good prices for each trip and / or layaway would be difficult. Hopefully everything goes smoothly for you. I have money being saved via a different bank account for another trip further down the line. That one will involve flying internationally.

Exactly! More little trinkets to bring home, or more food to try! I think I prefer trying different foods myself.

June usually starts slow for me, but by mid month it's flying. I am wondering how July will be for me. My birthday is in the second week of the month, and a friend's is about the mid week. I am hoping those two events will help the month of July fly by.

The time passes so quickly that I never used to count down until our trips. I have saved all my online earnings, it's a long time we do not leave for a nice vacation together.

This trip is a major one for me. I've only ever been to Virginia, nowhere else. I live in North Carolina, but my best friend spent the first 11 years of her life in Ohio. She, one of our other friends, and myself are the ones going to Ohio in July. I guess that's why I am so much more eager to count down the days.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I understand very much how you feel. I remember the first time I had to come from Europe to the United States. I was a bit concerned by the very long flight, but also very excited.

I heard about it through facebook and tagged two of my friends. They said how nice it would be to go and I told them that we were going. We started a facebook messenger group and have been chatting back and forth about it ever since. I will take plenty of pictures and share them here.

I barely remember what a vacation is since I work at home on my PC. Of course, once I return to the US and find myself a job I will once again have vacations to look forward to. I agree with you that is the best way to go. Save up money and also budget yourself then you can have a great vacation with the least amount of worry.

I have been saving since we decided on it a few months ago. I also work from home and so I have the most stress and strain when it comes to saving, but I'm not letting it bother me I've already saved half of my goal.

I have quite a healthy bank balance at the moment, so I don't need to save for our little holiday, thankfully. I remember being a little'un and counting down the days, saving my money for ice-cream and odd little trinkets! So much fun and anticipation!

I feel like a little one. My childhood was such that I didn't get to travel out of state, to the beach or anywhere really. I went to the mountains with my grandparents but that was only a day trip. Of course I loved that experience, but it didn't beat my very first beach experience. I don't really have an excuse as to why I haven't had more vacations now that I am an adult. I guess I never really felt the drive to. Of course this trip is my idea, so I am getting the drive to vaction more.

@Poppylicious I do love staying at home, either my own or that of my friends. I'm not much for going out on the town, but I do like an adventure, especially if it's going to consignment shops and little mom and pop boutiques. Luckily, I'll have my best friend with me, a girl who has been through so much anxiety with me and can get me out of it pretty quickly. Hopefully I won't go through any, but if I do I know she'll be able to help me out of it. Yes, family visit really don't count as holidays.

@ScribbledAdNauseum I find holidays to be difficult because I'm such a homebody. Home makes me feel safe, and although I do love to travel, I still find it difficult. Husband and I havent had {what I would call} a proper holiday - together - for about ten years. An odd weekend here or there, and visits with/to family just don't count! Enjoy your excitement and anticipation!
