A very ingenious piano at the Musical Village

On our way back from meeting with fellow myLotter Lynn Fowler, we visited the ‘musical village’ at Darnum. This was a fascinating place with a huge number of musical instruments, mostly pianos and organs, housed in several old buildings including a church which had been transported there and rebuilt. What was sad is that the place has now been sold and the various items will be auctioned off in July. The owner is a piano tuner and repairer but has also restored a number of the other instruments on display. Pictured is a piano of a type that I’ve never seen before but first a bit of background. When a person sings and is accompanied by a pianist, sometimes they find the notes overall are at a pitch that they can’t handle easily. Maybe the notes are in general too high or too low making a good performance difficult. However if the piano player is reading from the music it is difficult for him to play in another key ie to make the music higher or lower to suit the singer, unless he has the music rewritten. Some are able to transpose easily but most amateurs would need the music written out again in a different key. This piano solves that problem. By moving the lever within the red circle the whole keyboard can be moved slightly to the right or left so it hits a different set of strings. So the pianist can play the same music but by moving the lever, say, to the left the notes will sound lower than they did. I think this is a very clever idea.

That is a fantastic idea. I am surprised that most pianos don't do this.

@arthurchappell The first thing that comes to mind is 'oh what a tangled web we weave'. I'm sure you know the rest of it.

Anyone who invents a piano that makes the player sound good will make a fortune!

That is interesting. A very clever idea. People who are going to bed on these instruments are going to be lucky to have them.

Ingenious indeed. Although i would need a more advanced version which moved the keyboard under my fingers so that they were pressing the right notes!!

@WorDazza My friend learnt to play a very fancy piece by very slowly playing a piano roll and placing his hands over the notes as they went down. Too much like hard work for my liking.

A player piano would suit you and if you didn't want to pedal it you could get an automated one. Actually, might as well just put on a CD.

@Hannihar He is quite elderly now. He will still tune a few pianos I think but the 'village' has got too much for him now.

Fantastic idea that and that is one lovely image of a very lovely piano. My Gran had a really old Piano but it only had ordinary notes and nothing special like that.

He had some amazing instruments but it's hard to remember the details once you leave the place. You really need to record the person giving the tour.

Very nice piano .. that would suit me .... One of my childhood dreams is to learn how to play piano and own one .. I guess, it's too late now for that dream to become reality ..

@JudyEv oh wow! I didn't know you taught piano .. but maybe you mentioned in one of your previous posts but I have forgotten . I was gonna get a piano lesson from one of my costumers who teach piano .. She charges $60 an hour .. I didn't know that piano lessons are that expensive ...

I taught piano for many years but was useless at performing as I would get so nervous and make a lot of mistakes.

@epiffanie I rarely mention it because I play so badly in front of people. Maybe I should start teaching again if the going rate is $60 an hour. It was a good career for me really as later I was able to teach at home and didn't need childcare or working clothes, etc.

@judyev Church organs should all be equipped with that key changing device - most of us need to stand on tip toes to reach the notes some organists produce.

Hi Judy. It looks like playing the piani is quite difficult than it seems. That piano looks like the one who will solve the problem.

I didn't know that the Musical Village was being sold. That's sad. I've only been there once, several years ago, for a wonderful concert of classical music. It was a great experience, and it's a great pity others won't get to enjoy similar concerts.

The owner will feel very emotional I think seeing his treasures go off in different directions. The auction is bing held in July and the place will become a place for weddings, etc with B&B available onsite. I'm glad you got to see it although my photos are pretty bad. Vince was too busy talking technicalities with the guide to take too many photos.
