The Washington Capitals: Your 2018 Stanley Cup Champions

And another National Hockey League season comes to an end, as the Washington Capitals defeated the Las Vegas Golden Knights four games to one to become Stanley Cup Champions. All I can say is, Wow. If you didn't watch it, you missed one hell of a hockey game. Fast paced, with lots of intense action at both ends of the ice, hard hitting, and lots and lots of chippiness around the net after stoppages in play. As cool as the story would have been had Las Vegas become the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup, as I watched the series, I found myself rooting for Washington, which won it's first Championship in it's 44 years of existence, for two reasons. Team Captain Alexander Ovechkin was making his first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals. He will be a first ballot Hall of Famer when he is eligible, and, if it weren't for Sidney Crosby, would possibly be a unanimous vote as the best player in the world at the moment. It's always nice to see guys that have tried so hard for so many years finally getting to hoist the Cup. I was also rooting for Capitals coach Barry Trotz. A highly respected, brilliant hockey mind, Trotz made his name as the first coach of the then-expansion Nashville Predators, quickly guiding that team to respectability. This was the final year of Trotz' contract as Washington's head coach, and the team has yet to offer him a new contract. If they don't, complete with a fat raise, it will be a travesty. A genuinely nice guy by all accounts, Barry Trotz definitely deserved a Stanley Cup win. Congratulations to the Golden Knights on a season for the ages, and congratulations to the Washington Capitals, your 2018 Stanley Cup Champions!

What? When did Las Vegas get a pro hockey team. Shows you how much I have been watching hockey lately. I used to watch all the time when was a teenager. Congrats to Capitals though and Vegas for making Stanley cup in 2nd years of existence. I looked it up right now.

@teamfreak16 I always find it neat when teams can do that.

They had a great season. First expansion team to make the Stanley Cup Finals since the St. Louis Blues did it in 1968, and half the league was made up of expansion teams that year.

@crossbones27 - Expansion teams are supposed to be bad in any sport. They are basically made up of players that the other teams no longer want.

Would have been a good Cinderella finish for the Knights. Too bad. District of Champions baby!

@allen0187 They awesome and let me find you something. Sure Scott does not mind, he is cool like that and appreciates people who do things for the betterment of mankind. No trophies here just straight lead by example.

@rakski - It's definitely not as popular here as football, basketball, or baseball, but those of us that do like it are pretty hardcore fans.

Never even been to the finals before. They've been good enough in the Ovechkin era, but couldn't get past Pittsburgh until this year.

Glad they won. When they finally beat the Penguins I knew they had a great chance!

@dgobucks226 - Pittsburgh reminds me of the Avalanche, Red Wings, and Stars teams of the 90's/early 2000's. Stacked with talent.

It was about time. It was always Pittsburgh in the way. That had to get frustrating after awhile.

@teamfreak16 And many of those series always went 7 games. I like Pittsburgh but it was time to see a different team make it to the finals.
