Are you my grandfather or my cousin?

Everyone should know that old photographs are just one of my all time favorite things. It doesn't necessarily have to be photos of my family or their old homesteads. I enjoy old pictures of the community I live in, of historic buildings that may not be standing anymore and of people that I never met and whose blood does not run through my veins. However, recently we received a few photographs of family that I can claim as my own. One such photo is of my great great grandparents and my great grandmother with my great grand uncles. There is another photo that is of my great grand aunt and uncle, one of which we are a little unsure of. Is it my great grand uncle that only lived a few years or is it my great grandfather in the picture? We know one is my great grand aunt. There is yet another photo that I say must be of my great great and great great great grandparents but it might not be. There is a possibility that it is my first cousin's once removed family. Ugh it's all so confusing. I think that it is my great great and great great greats because the man has the same nose and facial structure as my great great grandfather. However, there isn't a real clear idea of when the "potential grandparents" picture was taken. Was it taken before or after the picture of my great great grandparents with their children? Yet again, there is another picture. However this one isn't as questionable as the other one. The question I have for this picture is "How old was I in this picture?" Of course before that question I was asking "Is this really me?" I won't be sharing any of the pictures I mentioned. Partially out of being lazy, and partially because I am not certain I could get a decent picture of said picture. I referenced this chart to help me figure out how to relate my grandfather's first cousins to who they were to me. As well as my great grand uncle.

I have found many albums of photos in the apartment of my mother. She used to write the year when the photos were taken and who were in the photos, this helped a lot, because I had no idea who some people were.

We also have the habit of writing down the year but not always who were in them. Of course the older the photo, the less likely there is writing on the back of who it is. The photos we received were form my great aunt and she wrote on some, but not others. She didn't write on the photo of the family reunion because there really was no need.

@LadyDuck I am sure it did. We came across one album after my grandmother passed. There were photos we had never seen before mixed in with photos of my cousins and myself. It was very odd to see it arranged that way.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Also the mother of my husband wrote behind every photo the year and the people on the photo. We both appreciated, this helped re arranging the photos inside the albums.

It messed my mind up as well. I had to go back and edit it a couple of times because it didn't make sense. Did you buy them through estate sales or ebay or something? I've thought of buying old photos but through digital forsyth, which is the digitalization of old photos from my county, some of which are pictures of towns that no longer exist.

I love looking at the way things were over a century ago. There is a website dedicated to old photographs from my county. You can buy the photos and either print them or pick them up in Old Salem, which is a historic town now turned museum.

I wish I had written who Where and when on all my pictures. I can't tell one of my nieces and nephews early pictures from another.

You have no one to ask about it now? I have some photos of my father's side that I just have to "guess at" because I am unsure.

@RubyHawk I still haven't uncovered the mystery of the one photo with the four people in it. I do love old photographs though. I feel as if it makes me that much closer to the family I never met or have only met sparingly.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Yes, I can ask if I think about it when family is here. And some pictures they don't remember either.

I agree, definitely. There are some photos I'd like to make copies of and put in an album.

We have quite a few here, some of which we aren't sure who they are. We know they are family but how we are related, I'm not sure.

@Jessabuma Your immediate family? Like your mother, father, siblings? We have pictures of my grandfather's family and of my grandmother's family. My grandmother passed away at the beginning of the year and we have found photo albums we had no idea existed. My grandfather doesn't even know who some of her relatives are.

It boggles me sometimes. Especially when talking to others in the family about it, since some are at the same level of relation to them as me, and others are closer in relation. My grandfather talks about "his uncle" and I have to remember it's my great grand (My mom's great uncle)

Black and White make for great photos. I use filters that make most of my photos black and white. I also like the sepia tones as well.
