Whodunnit? Can you name those songs and artists? Just think of girl's names which begin with an "S," it just might put you on "track" to name that tune. "All you wanna do is ride around Sally, ride Sally ride." A classic lyric from the 1966 recording of Mustang Sally by Wilson Pickett and our feature girl song video today. The singer bought her a car, and she's running around town in that Mustang instead of paying attention to her fella. Recorded at the revered Muscle Shoals studios with those muscians backing Pickett. Now let's see what other "S" girl titles are on our trivia list. Clues: 1. You might be familar with this S-girl song which was covered by the Beatles and was recorded by this flamboyant performer back in 1956. This was the artists biggest hit winding up at # 6 on the record charts. Paul Mc Cartney was influenced by watching this performer. The "woooo" sung in the classic "I Saw Her Standing There" was a direct result of the Beatle watching this artist perform on stage. Deeply religious, this singer became born again in 1957 and eventually was ordained a minister in 1970. 2. Another girlfriend inspired song written and performed by this blue-eyed soul duo based out of Philadelphia, Pa. This tune always brought a smile to the couple until their breakup 28 years later. Now, it is especially difficult for this S-female to hear this top ten hit, first released in 1975, and played often on radio DJ's playlists. This Rock n' Soul duo had another song called "She's Gone" which was recorded earlier. She's Gone would have been the perfect tune to record and release after their breakup not before. Final clues, these guys surpassed The Everly Brothers in 1984 as the top-selling duo of all-time, on the strength of # 1 hits like; "Kiss on my List," "Rich Girl," and "Maneater." 3. The group released this song in 1972 and it was their first hit reaching #5 on the billboard charts. Part of this band's name was inspired by a character in the Peter Pan fairy tale. The song's writer was reflecting on his failed attempt to revive a relationship with this S-named girl. Despondent, he calls her to find out why she is leaving town, and to get an explanation as to what happened with their romance. Instead, the phone call is answered by the girl's mother, who tells him it's over and she's going to marry someone else. As he is pleading with the girl's mother that he has to talk with her daughter, the operator cuts in to inform him that he needs to deposit more change for additional time, since he is calling from a phone booth. Fun Fact: this top ten hit is a true story. Do you know the names of these songs and artists? Good luck and use those clues! Liner Notes: -Another version of Mustang Sally was done by the great blues guitarist Buddy Guy, who influenced a Who's Who of 60's and 70's muscians including Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and Jimmy Page. -Lots of great additional S-lady tunes needs to be mentioned here. Among them: The Kinks/Sunny Afternoon, Jefferson Starship/Sara, 4 Seasons/Sherry, Buddy Holly/Peggy Sue. Bruce Springsteen & E-St. Band/4th of July Asbury Park, (Sandy). -Thanks to Faye and jujunme for those S-girl suggestions in the previous trivia quiz.... - Any other popular S-named girl song suggestions are welcome? #1 The artist is Little Richard. #2 #3 Was a hard one but a good song- Sylvia's Mother-by Dr. Hook & The Medicine Show. Sunny is a girl's name but the song is not about a girl. You got me on that one. Good song though. Here's this interesting # 3 tune.

I never thought to ask her what the letter G stood for But I know for sure it wasn’t “good” (“Sally G.,” Paul McCartney & Wings) Given that was the B-side of “Junior’s Farm” and played more on the country stations than the rock stations, I can see why you’d omit this one. And speaking of Shel Silverstein (who wrote song #3), how about his biggest S-named song ever: “A Boy Named Sue”!!!! Rev. Pennimen would be haulin’ oats if he worked on a long tall farm!

Yes, Junior's B-side did not make the cut. Silverstein had quite a successful relationship with the Dr. Hook band. He penned their classic "Cover of The Rolling Stone." He also wrote a take off on # 3 writing Sylvia's Father changing the last two verses. Enjoyed your comments as always....
