That's right, I did it!! I went an entire month without a top ten music post! Aren't you proud of me?! It's time to resume, and I'm going to a subject that was inspired by my recent weekend trip to eastern Kentucky. This countdown is about coal mining. Yes, "that" song will be in the list. And yes, most of these will be country songs (given that the region and the work lend themselves to a close affiliation with the "blue-collar" themes of country). And no, this song WON'T be on the list, despite the analogy in the title. For those of you who don't know what the analogy is: before technology, canaries were taken into coal mines because, as the opening line of the song says, they were "first to fall over when the atmosphere is less than perfect." If the canary died, men knew to get out of the mine, pronto.
