Bruny Island is a popular holiday and tourist destination at the south tip and just off the east coast of Tasmania. A 15-minute ferry ride and you’re driving off onto the island. There is a North and South Island with the two joined by a narrow strip of land. Penguins breed along the neck of land which has a low fence to deter them from crossing the road except at certain points. There are ‘stiles’ – little wooden ramps supplied for them so they can go up and over the fence. There was nothing to say how the little birds learnt to use the ramps or indeed, if they use them at all.

We spent a few hours on Philips Island in Melbourne and what a sight it was when these baby sized penguins emerging from the sea one by one and then getting into their caves or whatever.

@JudyEv It was miles away from where we were put up and when we returned it was quite late. We skipped the next sight seeing option which was the 12 apostles - the Great Ocean Road.

We didn't see the penguins in Tasmania. Sometimes prices for some of these tours seem pretty outrageous and I get my back up and refuse to pay so I miss out. I haven't been to Phillip Island.

@allknowing We are going home along the Great Ocean Road. I've never seen the 12 apostles but Vince has.

@mlgen1037 They have them in Victoria too so perhaps I'll be luckier here.

@judyev How considerate. I’ve heard of tunnels built under highways in England to let wildlife cross between both sides.

@MALUSE I'm a bit surprised that the wild animals accept these tunnels. It must be something quite foreign to their nature.

@MALUSE Oh I see. Our tunnels are probably much bigger.

I wonder if they do. Interesting they made accommodations for them. It definitely keeps them from being hurt. At least I hope so.

We didn't see any squashed ones which was a good sign. I'd hate to have seen that.

Well that's interesting..Is it cold there? I basically think of penguins at the pole and other cold weather areas.

I was a bit surprised too although they have them in Victoria too. It is a bit colder than what we're used to but nothing like Antarctica. I don't think they'd even get a lot of snow where the penguins are.

Why would they want to wander around such a dry area.

That's just the road verge. And yes, it does look dry but actually there is a lot of water both sides of the road and the farmlands are quite lush.

I love the funny way they waddle along with their little wings out - and the baby ones are beautiful.
