He didn't fell the tree, but it sure felled him.

My memory tells me that he was a logger of some sort. It might not have been his trade though, but perhaps a task borne of necessity. Whatever the reason, it would see the death of him. I was told of this in such a way that I could almost plainly see the man himself standing before the tree. It seems to me that this all happened on a spring day, the weather was brisk but just enough to make outside chores tolerable. He wore a heavy jacket and fastened to it and himself were chains. He kept them there in case he needed to scale the tree and chop away at it that way. Perhaps, if he had, he'd have lived a little longer. I don't know of the exact circumstances of his death, but I do know he left behind a wife and a baby boy, his namesake. He would be seen again, but as an apparition. A pale form floating before the windows that overlooked the front yard and valley below. His niece was sitting at those windows at the time and screamed when he appeared before her. **I use Felled which means "Cut down (as in a tree) instead of "failed".*

That is awful. Years ago that seemed to happen a lot.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Wow! That really makes it sad. I am glad that you didn't have any accidents today. Things has changed a lot over the years.

@I prefer a lot of the older ways but like with this accident the new ways and machinery are a blessing.

@velvet53 Yeah it really has. Sometimes I feel nostalgic for the way things used to be but I am averse to change in general.

@shaggin I think my grandmother was around the age of ten years old, maybe a little younger. She used to tell us about this every time it rained.

I have heard many stories like this from my grandmother. She even said that my grandfather married her when they both were very young, because he used to see a ghost in the mist when he visited her during the winter months.

That's a very interesting story. He married her because he saw a ghost in the mist? Was he trying to get her away from it?

@ScribbledAdNauseum No, he was scared and decided to shorten the time he dated my granny. He did not want to cross that bridge for too long.

Interesting use of the word fallen by using felled.

@Deepizzaguy Apparently it's also a term that can be used in seamstress type work. That I wasn't aware of. You are welcome, though I didn't mean for it to be a correction per se.

"fell" is the proper term when talking about a tree. You wouldn't say "He fallen the tree".

was it something that happened when you were a child? Children have long memories.

I wasn't the child but it did happen many years ago. Back in the late 40's most likely.

It certainly is. I can't remember if he had been turned away from it or not. I think he had to be somewhat young. His son was just a little infant.

HI Amber. So sorry for the man. The niece would have been scared to see him.

The man was my great grand uncle, the niece was my grandmother. She had told me this story many many times. One of the last times she told me, she told me a little more of it than she ever had before. She was startled and scared.
