As we head towards the end of the academic year the life I live at work winds down and becomes increasingly boredom-inducing. Students have mostly scarpered, except for the few stragglers who have yet to complete units of work. The corridors at college seem vast and silent. We get given copious amounts of paperwork to do in an effort to keep us looking busy. The Food Fairy fills the iceboxes in the staffroom with a variety of ice-creams ... both an end of term present and a nod to the heatwave outside. Fans whirl, even though we found the switch for the aircon. And of course, there's the mandatory staff conference. Senior Management and the popular staff {bottom feeders} give each other high fives and pat themselves on the back as they congratulate their ability to crunch numbers and speak waffle. Meanwhile the minions - everybody else, those who do the hard work and retain bums on seats - must applaud graciously and enjoy the fact that we're being allowed to sit in a stuffy old hall in the centre of town listening to the waffling drones of folk who are paid an enormous amount of money. That will be my afternoon of awkwardness. And the pain? Well, that deserves a post all to itself. Including today, I have six more days of work to endure. Then a long glorious summer awaits. Nice.
