A Strange Thought On Cloning?

If you had the chance to live forever, would you want to? I think a lot of times this question is answered in a variety of ways depending on the circumstances. Can I be healthy? Can I still see my loved ones? Does life still have purpose and meaning? How does the world deal with a population that only grows and never dies? I think the idea of living forever has some intrigue for me. But at the end of the day I still want to be me. What if you could clone your body? What if brain transplants could be perfected? What if you could have a younger body stored awaiting a brain transplant, and you could have your brain transplanted into your new body when you die? Of course, there are some ailments that still affect the brain that could wash out any chance for living forever. Alzheimer's comes to mind. So do brain tumors. So does the very real reality that even our brains age and diminish with the aging process in a variety of ways. How can you preserve even the brain? Is there a way to upload your conscience into a computer and download it even into a new brain so you are still you? Fresh and revitalized? CAN you even do this? Or would you simply be a new version of yourself with a new conscience but the memories of someone else? It boggles the mind. If I could do it. If the technology was there. If it could be done. I think I would be willing to try it. Of course, there would also be the tribulations of having to potentially start all over. Let's say, for example, you lived well into your retirement years. Now you go back into say, a 21 year old body. You are still you. So you still have your same self, your money is retained (what you have left), but now you start a whole new path, making new money. But now, let's say you are married. You die. You get a new body. But your wife is still alive. You are now 21 and she is 70. You have to wait for her to die to get her new body. Or do you? Can you have her put to sleep and renewed as well? And what of your children? Maybe they are in their 50s and now you are in your 20s? And can you still reproduce? Now you may have more children. New children. Where do all of your past children and grandchildren fit into the equation? Death is final. That is the way it has always been. In many ways, and for many people it is what in part brings a purpose and meaning to life. But what if? It's a question that fascinates me. If I could clone would I? If I could live forever would I? And how would this change the idea of life as a whole? And then...who would be able to afford to live forever? Would this option be only available to those who have the means to live forever? To pay for the cloning? The storage of the new body or bodies? The cost of the brain transplants? Or the uploading of conscience and downloading into the new brains? What say you?

Oh that is a tough questions. There are a lot of variables, like the ones you mentioned - that would sway my choice. Is my body alright? How about my loved ones? Have I gone crazy? What is my quality of life? A lot of my favorite movies deal with the subject come to think on it. "6th Day", "Vanilla Sky", "AI", even "Interview with the Vampire" as the vampires are supposed to be immortal. Oh! Edit to add: "Multiplicity".

Definitely leaves one to ponder many, many things. Great movie choices by the way.

I think that if man does it it will be one big mess. Let's leave such a project to God as in the Bible He has already told how He will do it right.

What a lot of questions! - but very interesting. Right now There is a 74 year old man still living with his 70 year old wife. He has a few of the diseases - like diabetes, arthritis and heart problems, but his wife is healthy and could easily pass for 30. Why is that? - because unlike him she follows a very strict diet , doesn't eat meat and eats mainly raw food. Of course, eating right cannot assure us of long life - we could die by accident or a bullet, but we do have some measure of control over how we age and progress in life.

I mean, to be able to stick around, continue to get richer and richer and be able to see how the world progresses? That would be fascinating to me.
