I got into the habit of having flashlights and extra batteries in every room in case the power went out. In theory that's a great idea but if your household is like mine, the flashlights grow legs and walk away. Glow sticks seemed like a great alternative because they never needed batteries replaced and all it took to get them going was a quick crack and shake.
Glow sticks can be purchased in small or large quantities as well as different sizes. If you want something wearable you can get them in necklace or bracelet styles. They are disposable and non-toxic so they are a little safer for kids to used if the power goes out or they want to run around outside after the sun goes down. While they aren't as bright as a flashlight they are dependable and i dropped into a bottle or jar of water, it increases the glow strength.
