come home, british summertime

United Kingdom
July 5, 2018 1:25am CST
I think that the whole of the UK has been picked up and plonked unceremoniously into the middle of Australia. It's hot. Hotty hotty hot pants. Where once there was luscious, bouncy green grass there is now only swathes of dry, yellow grass. Light a match to it and whoosh! Watch it burn. There has been no rain in the area since the 9th of June, and even that wasn't particularly impressive. You're not suffering with Heatwave! laugh people from other countries, where 30° Celsius {86°F} is the norm. But it's all relative, isn't it? Summer over here has an average temperature of about 20°C {68°F}. Anything above this is considered really warm. If we're really lucky {?!} we may be blessed with temperatures of 25°C, or even 27°C, but only for a day or two, or perhaps three, rarely more than a week anyway. And rain is a given; it always rains here. So for us this is a heatwave of epic proportions! Our bodies are adapted to the wet, cool British climate, not the heat and humidity of the Sahara Desert. I wish that British Summer would come home from wherever he's gone. I want normality to be resumed, but unfortunately this may not occur for a couple of weeks ... just in time for the schools to break up for their summer hols! Cheeky weather! In Good News, I am getting a tan. I say tan, but I just mean that my skin is a less pale shade of white. And my vitamin D levels must be bouncing through the roof. That has to be good for my aches and pains, yes? It's my last day of work today. Woohoo!

I fear that someone pushed British rain here. We had one dry week around the end of June and now we have torrential rain almost every night. The past night the thunders and lightnings were scary. This morning the temperature is not even 20º C (68 F). I do not complain, I hate hot temperatures.

@Poppylicious I am so glad that it rains every night. This keeps the temperature down and I do not even need to water the garden. Perfect weather.

it has cooled down and rained in the UKin the last few days. We always tend to think of Australia as extremely hot here

@arthurchappell At least you had a break. The weatherman says it's going to be *very hot* here in the East for the whole of this week. I just want a storm, or a bit of rain. Something refreshing, just to break it up a bit.

It still hasn't rained here in East Anglia. And it's still terribly muggy.

The weather of 27 degrees centigrade is very comfortable for me. The temperature of our place is basically about 37 degrees centigrade.

Enjoy the vacation. Yes, I always wonder when people say hot and I calculate the Fahrenheit to centigrade , why are the saying hot. But as you say it's relative. The serious part is that climate change is no longer confined to the pages of text books and seminars.

We are really not suited to hot over here! I also read that even people from actual hot countries think it's too hot here at the moment, that 30°C in the UK isn't the same as 30°C in countries where that's the norm. I don't understand why though.

I thought the US won being the country with very high temperature recently, 45C or something similar. Congrats re: you having your holiday. Lucky you. I thought I would have some too but I miscalculated

America likes to be best at everything. We have had no rain in my neck of the woods since the beginning of June and the temperature is still unseasonably hot {for England.}

Hello! *waves* My plants aren't enjoying it. The lavender seems fine though! The cats don't know what to do with themselves either. Poor things.

There hasnt been any rain here for quite some time also. The vegetation is looking brown and parched, the lakes are drying up.

I would love some rain. Even just a little, to take the edge off.
