Greetings from sunny Golden, Colorado. It's a camping edition of Play it Again, Sam. I've been watching girls in bikinis, errrr, people, carrying tubes up the bike path next to our campground, and then floating down the creek on them. Unfortunately, today's song has nothing to do with that! As always, Play it Again, Sam is a two part discussion consisting of an original song followed by a cover of that song. We are at #8a, the "original:" "Fly Like an Eagle" by The Steve Miller Band.
The title track from The Steve Miller Band's classic 1976 album, the trippy, groovy "Fly Like an Eagle" was first conceived of by Miller in 1973, when the band would perform it in concert. The tune was originally more blues-oriented, with more emphasis on the guitars. The synthesizers were later added when the song, with a tweak in Miller's original lyrics, was recorded for the album.
The song was a big hit for Miller, reaching #2 on the Billboard Hot 100, as well as #2 in Canada (and #28 in The Netherlands.) The single has sold over one million copies in the United States, and remains a staple on Classic Rock Radio to this day (even the stations that only play the same 250 songs over and over and over every single day!)
I've linked to a really cool, psychedelic live performance on The Midnight Special. If you haven't watched it before, it's got some great trippy guitar play from Miller.
