Do you give money to beggars on subways?

When people on subways sing a song, play an instrument, break dance, etc., basically entertain us, I see no problem in giving them some change or maybe even a dollar. That's a small price to pay for being entertained. Though I have to admit I rarely do. But when people walk around and beg for money I am against that and will definitely not consider giving them anything, especially when they ask for money so they can get themselves weed. I've seen people sit on the street with a sign "Need money for weed" or something to that effect. Their money jars were always empty of course. Some people make up stories to try and make you feel sorry for them so you can give them something. Some use their little kids for that same purpose, maybe even lying that their kids are seriously ill. Some beg but, by the clothes they wear or the haircut they have, they don't look like they are having a hard time financially... But then again, looks can be deceiving. I saw one guy on the subway the other day begging for money. He was speaking loudly, saying he got laid off along with some other coworkers and that he needs this much money for this, that much money for that, etc.. And then he said that if we have a heart we will give him something to help him reach his goals. No one gave him anything. Not even a penny. Does that mean no one on that train has a heart? The guy was very upset when no one gave him anything and stormed off the train. What did he expect? You can't expect someone to give you anything when you say something like that. And you can't demand that people give you something. It is their choice whether they should help you out or not. Who knows what the guy's actual true story is but it takes guts to beg though. I think that I would not be able to do it, if I really had no other choice. I heard one passenger tell another that the guy looks like he is on something... I myself could not tell. But maybe it's because I had no glasses on at the time.

I don“t give money to beggars because I have been scammed. As for people who play an instrument, it depends on my mood.

@marguicha Wow! Rented the baby? That's awful to use someone else's child for something like this. Or even your own.

I think the same as you do. If it was street music, I would give them money. If they were pure beggars, I would not give them.

I do not give money, some beggars here are too choosy. They will ask you for a certain amount.

We very rarely give to beggars, although we've bought Veterans breakfasts (bagel and coffee). If we are entertained and stop to listen or watch, we will give some money to the performers. It's all so personal.

We've done it a few times, but not in years. Only thing we do now is give to the salvation army charity at Christmas time. and if someone we know needs help, we help them if we can.. though not by giving money. we give food, time, babysit.. etc. Though, I do feel bad for those who actually need the help and don't get it because of the awful fake people out there that don't need it and make it so people don't give..

No, I do not as it encourages such behavior and lifestyle. The "entertainment' is almost always awful. Plus I suspect many are organized which is the situation in Paris where beggars and street/train entertainers are professionally organized. The "professional beggar" was noted in literature dating back to the 1800s.

It does seem like some people beg for a living because you see them quite often on subways. Same faces, sames stories... Some even have a specific time in the day they do it. This guy that I saw on the subway begging was actually telling us the days and times during the week he goes on subways to beg.

Nope, if someone asks for money, I'm always broke at the time(so I say). Dancing or performing for money, yah I'll add some pocket change.

If they approach me directly I either move away without saying a word or say something like "I'm sorry. I can't."

There are often times when it's a child and I have the time, I take them to eat in a local convenience store
