The Law Of Holes

It seems to me that I saw this on a music video for Ray Stevens. I'm guessing it must have been his song Sitting Up With The Dead. That's not really what I mean to talk about though. You see, I am reading that book The WIly O'Reilly Irish Country Stories By Patrick Taylor and a story by the name of The Law Of Holes is told about The Doctor O'Reilly. His friend and fellow doctor by the name of Taylor tells us about coming in from work to find Dr. O'Reilly not his usual self. The man (O'Reilly) talks in circles quite a bit and this time is no different. He has given up the drink (alcohol) because of "The Holes." Now Dr. Taylor, as well as his audience, is confused. What do holes have to do with giving up the drink? Apparently Dr. O'Reilly was walking home from a send off party of two local residents emigrating to America. He had imbibed and decided to cut through the cemetery as it was presumably quicker. He ended up falling into a freshly dug grave and after an attempt to extricate himself, gave up and said aloud "Well O'Reilly you aren't getting out of this tonight." The guest of honor had apparently also taken the same shortcut and had befallen the same fate.O'Reilly felt a clap on his shoulder before the man said "Nope, By God Ye aren't." But he did, you see, such was the fright of another being in the freshly dug grave with him. ** I believe in Ray Stevens music video "Sitting up with the dead" there is a scene where he is shown scrambling out of a grave. Though it may be something different I am thinking of altogether.**

It really is quite funny. Somethings might be a bit too risky, but most of it is stories written in good fun.

I suppose he can refer to "The Holes" as "holes in his head", meaning he cannot remember what he does when he is drunk.

He very well could. At the end of the story, Dr. Taylor told Dr. O"Reilly that spirits were the best thing for shock, so his abstinence was short lived.

@ScribbledAdNauseum Sometimes people realize that not remembering is not so bad after all.

@ScribbledAdNauseum sounds an interesting book. Congratulations as just noticed this is your 1,000 post. - your title reminded me of this song by Traffic
I bought this single when it came out (Smiling Phases was the 'B' side). This song was written and sung by Dave Mason, rather than Steve Winwood who did most...

I listened to a little over two minutes of it but the background instruments were hurting my ears a little. I feel as if I have heard of the song, if not heard it directly before. Bringing to mind songs about Holes I am reminded of the nursery rhyme about a hole in a pocket.

That would terrify me to first, fall into a grave, and then find it already occupied.

@just4him I'm sure I'd manage a scream or two. I can really belt one out when necessary.

All I have been able to think of since reading Ray Stevens name in this post is the song about the squirrel. Oooh and Taylor Swift is stalking me.

We have a VHS of some of his popular songs. I heard the Taylor Swift is stalking me song a few years ago and thought it was cute.

It is a really fun book. I got it for $2.50 but it retails at $9.00. There are some funny stories, some heart warming stories, and some that are a combination of the two. All of them somewhat link up in one way or another, and all of them involve Dr. O'Reilly and a fictional town in the Ulster Region of Northern Ireland.
