Ten Albums "Everybody" Owned -- Including Me: Abbey Road (#9)

Don't tell anyone, but I'm still not hurting after therapy yesterday. I figure positive changes and "aches," not pain, is enough to get a therapist fired. I'll celebrate by giving you another one of those mega-selling albums that sold so many copies you're sure "everybody" has it. I just finished a countdown of albums that I didn't buy, but this time around, I'm part of the masses. Here's today's album. #9: Abbey Road - Beatles You can add to this pretty much every Beatles album going back to Help! (with the exception of Yellow Submarine), too. With over 31 million copies sold worldwide, I'm not alone in having bought this album. However, I do not consider this "the greatest Beatles album." (I'd go with Revolver, the only Beatles album I still own.) If you go back to 1969, critics weren't all that kind to this album. Of course, it's the Beatles and you can't badmouth them now, but I'll take the chance and do so. Last year I did a list of "songs that make me cringe." One of those songs came from this album: "I Want You (She's So Heavy)." Just ick. And "Come Together" might be a good song if they'd thrown in a second chord. On the other hand, this album has some incredible gems as well. Notably, "Something," a song so beautiful that even staunch rock and roll hater Frank Sinatra called it "the greatest love song of the past 50 years." George Harrison's other song on the album, "Here Comes the Sun," is also terrific (and it's probably the first song a lot of people think of when spring rolls around, especially after a "long, cold, lonely winter"). My favorite song from the album is "Golden Slumbers." Not the entire medley, mind you (I find a lot of that medley forgettable), and not even "Carry That Weight" (immediately following it in the medley). Dang, that's a pretty song. But then, I always was a Paul fan when it came to the Beatles. Maybe it's because I bought the album in 1976 instead of when it came out in 1969, or because it's played to death on radio, but I'm by and large not that impressed with this album as a "classic." But Her Majesty's a pretty nice girl. Abbey Road Recorded by the Beatles Produced by George Martin Released in 1969 The simply superb "Something":

This may be hard to believe, but I don't own and never have owned a Beatles album. For the life of me, I cannot say why. I love much of their music. I think that by the time I was old enough to have the money to start buying albums they'd long since broken up and it wasn't until much later that I developed a real appreciation for their work. By then, individual downloads made it easy to pick and choose which songs I wanted rather than buying whole albums.

I was in that "tweener time" in the 70s when they got airplay, but all four Beatles had active solo careers (especially McCartney, who was doing the "Wings Over America" tour in '76). Honestly, as much as they are played today, I agree with you that it's more likely that people are buying Beatles songs instead of Beatles albums.

I recommend downloading The Beatles Album titled "1." A terrific selection of their # 1 hits throughout the groups career.

I prefer Come Together over most other Beatles tunes.

I am going to say something that will probably get rocks hurled at me. I have never been that into The Beatles. I like some of the stuff the individual members did when they were our by themselves. But for the most part I have thought the Beatles were overrated.

I would tend to agree. I think their impact early in their career was far more cultural than musical.

@FourWalls See their cultural impact is interesting to me. Their music is eh. Maybe because it was force fed to me when i was younger, Maybe just because everybody thinks they are soo amazing. I was just never all that impressed. I do like some of McCartney's stuff by himself. And Lennon was pretty nifty. lol

Lots of infighting among the boys during both the Abbey Road and Let It Be (liked this album more) sessions. Although a bit less tension with Abbey Road, Lennon had quit the group by the time the album was released. I did not prefer the Medley on side 2, parts worked, others didn't as you pointed out. Thankfully, Harrison's creative efforts contributed mightily to that album's commercial success reaching # 1 in both the U.S/UK.
