jeepney music

when i got on the jeepney, the song being played was 'we built this city' by starship (1985).
next was 'jump' by van halen (1984), 'you may be right' by billy joel (1980), then 'mony mony' by billy idol (1981) as i got off.
a jeepney is one form of public transportation in the philippines.
just like buses, taxis and tricycles, some drivers play music, either tuned into an fm radio station or their own playlist.
whatever era or genre, i don't really mind listening, as long as the volume is bearable.
if it's too loud, the driver can't hear if someone is paying their fare or wants to get off.
i've never worn earphones when i'm out.
even from the time of the walkman, discman, mp3, ipod, etc.
i prefer to hear my surroundings.
not hearing approaching vehicles or trains can lead to accidents and injuries.
do you know those four songs from the '80s?
do your public transportation play music?

@hereandthere I did take a cab in Mexico once. Also, one in Australia. But there isn't a train near me, and the bus stop is five miles away. I'm blessed to have a vehicle.

It's just a matter of time before our traditional jeep is replaced by the electronic version, hope its wi-fi because people now tend to be more busy with their own thing rather than listen to a common music. I use to commute a lot when I was a student but I had not ridden public transport for a long time, I don't even know the jeepney fares now
. I'm familiar with those songs you mentioned.

@hereandthere everything is water proof depending only on how deep the flood is
, if water reaches the electronics or even the electrical and engine of the conventional one then it's " Undoy"( flooded cars named after an infamous typhoon)
With conditions here, they should make it amphibious

the minimum is 9 pesos now (used to be 8)
the entrance/exit should really be moved to the side. that would also mean no more "sabit" (people hanging at the back)
are electronic vehicles flood-proof?

there are cars here that play loud music with the windows down, sometimes at 3am.

@hereandthere I really can't memorize the title of songs that I listen to but the playlist in my USB in the car are mostly songs of the 80's and 90's and some 70's. I like soothing and bubbly songs too. Some of the songs in my playlist are American Pie, Annie's Song, I will be here, I've never been to me, instrumental from Kenny G, some songs of Whitney Houston and others which I can't quite remember :)

@chicnthin that's good then. you're still safety conscious.
i've sat next to other passengers where i can hear what they're listening to, or the game they're playing.
i've also sat next to passengers who don't realize they're singing loudly - and out of tune! hahaha!

@hereandthere yeah, the volume is not that loud for me to be aware of what's been happening.

@hereandthere Now it looks like a minibus but when I was there thirty years ago, the side was open but with barriers.
It used to be quite cheap though not easy for tourists to pop in and out as one should know the routes well and should be prepared for an uncomfortable shared journey - siva

Those songs are great. I never wear earphones when I'm out unless I'm listening to a travel podcast and it's telling me where to go. Our public transport doesn't play music. We once had a trial where a TV was put in the front of our local buses. It played a comedy show. Unfortunately the bus engine was too loud so all you could ever hear was the sound of audiences laughing on the TV and passengers quickly got annoyed by it.

I do know those songs from the '80s ;o)
I rarely take public transport now, but when I do take one -- like a trike or a multicab -- yes, I notice there's music playing.

with tricycle, yes, even when they don't have passengers. even those on scooters play music loudly. i've never been on nor seen a multicab. is that like the ford fiera and toyota tamaraw?

@hereandthere similar to a fiera but smaller.

i was still bopping my head and singing 'mony mony' when i got off.
it's nice but there's the tendency to play it loud.
i look at those wearing earphones and imagine they'd have to have the volume way up to hear their own music (or while they're playing games on their devices) since the jeepney have open windows so you can hear the engine and the street noises.

I am retro all the way when it comes to music. I love all of those songs. Public transit here does not play music. The drivers cannot be distracted in any way and everyone bringing their music on the bus must wear headphones.

i've always felt jeepney drivers here are the first multi-taskers. while driving, they're looking out for new passengers, accepting fare, computing and giving back change, then maneuvering and stopping if someone says 'para' (stop).
does that cover buses, taxis and trains? are public drivers allowed to use cellphones?

@hereandthere They carry a cellphone for work purposes only. To communicate with dispatch and their supervisors. The drivers here don't give back change. You are required to have the correct change, or you can purchase a monthly bus pass or bus tickets.

true. however, it can get real noisy sometimes so the driver can't hear when someone calls out "para!"

Most of them have sound system installed. Although I noticed that when the drivers are already old they don't put music on their jeepney and when you see young drivers most likely they will have a stereo placed there to entertain themselves while doing their normal routes.
I agree I do not want those that are really loud players. To compensate for the loud music they usually would install this device that you pull a string to stop the vehicle when you want to go down.

I love the photo of the jeepney. It is funny they play 80s music as it moves along its route. I driver might not hear when someone wishes to get off it. Also someone might ask the price of the ride and the driver might not hear. When walking around I like to hear my surroundings. Some people have been killed on the level crossing of the train track. I always look each way and listen for a train coming. Trains can't do an emergency stop like a car could. When my son was in a hospital bed years ago he was opposite a boy that had been hit by a car. He had got hit by a car on his way home from school. I often listen at home to 80s music.

yes, i've read of such news - of people who didn't hear the train because they were listening to music.
i hope that boy who was hit by a car is more careful now. i hope he tells his friends about it, too.

yeah, i remember reading about that in the comments under the youtube video while i was listening to it, but forgot to search about it.
now that you mention it, i searched and found the original video by tommy james and the shondells back in 1968. but what's cool is billy idol's version is still similar to it. some of the revivals i came to know about are totally different.
here's the link to the original mony mony as you can see from the hair, the clothes, the psychedelic background:
