The Regenerating Organ

I find it amazing that the liver can regenerate itself. It is the only human organ that can do this. This reddish brown organ is located on the right side of the belly and weighs about 3 pounds.
Hepatocytes are the cells in the liver that give the organ it's ability to regenerate. Like stem cells they can re-form liver cells. A person can lose 75 percent of the liver and it can still regenerate itself.
Pretty amazing, huh?

@celticeagle we have only one body so we must take care of it.

The largest organ of the body is the skin. Skin cells regenerate themselves every 7 years so the liver is not the only organ that regenerates.

Yeah that's why my sister, who happens to be a doctor, told me many years ago not to be afraid to donate my liver as it regenerates anyway.

Yes, wish the other organs would do the same. Of course the skin does.

@celticeagle it would be wonderful if our organs were self healing.
