As Monday dawns, bright and way too early, it's time to give you another one of those classic films that "everybody," apparently, has seen...except me. This is a follow-up to a series of albums that "everybody" owned, except me. I'll be shifting gears, as I did in that series, and looking at movies that I did see (including those I really wish I hadn't). Meanwhile, here's today's classic. #8: The Exorcist PLOT: girl spits pea soup at a priest. Okay, there's a little more to it than that. Why I've never seen this is a quite simple two-fold explanation. One, I was way too young to see it when it was released (I was only 13 when this came out, and I was still a year or so away from seeing my first R-rated movie [Harry and Tonto, if you're interested...or even if you're not interested ]); and two, by the time I was old enough to see the movie I had no interest in seeing the movie. I know people who had the holy poop scared out of them by this movie. And, as it may become evident as this progresses, I'm not much on "horror" films (there is one horror film on the "films I wish I hadn't seen" list, but that's a completely different type of horror...which I'll explain when I get to it). But a lot of people enjoyed getting the holy poop scared out of them, as it grossed over $440 million (that's 1970s money) and became the first "horror" film nominated for the "Best Picture" Oscar. Oh, and it spawned a hit: Mike Oldfield's "Tubular Bells." None of it was my style. Still isn't. The Exorcist Directed by William Friedkin Released in 1973 (the day after Christmas, no less!) Here's "Tubular Bells," the hit from the film:

@JohnRoberts -- I think he'd appreciate Fritz the Cat (which was voiced by an actor on The Electric Company, go figure) more.

I've tried watching this movie a couple of times when it's been on cable and I just can't get through it. I love a good horror movie bit not this kind of horror movie. I like the more suspenseful ones where it's more what you don't see that scares you.

I didn't see Exorcist too. Such movies assault my sensibility.

That was some horror movie. When I was watching this movie and actually hoping the characters in the film do not go back in that bedroom to perform the exorcism you know I'm freaked out by that little girl and her spinning head!

I've read the book, but have never seen the film. To be honest, films of this sort don't interest me at all, so I think I will pass on it. I do like Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells.
