As per promised, I will bring some ghost stories as that today is the first day of Hungry Ghost Festival. Over the month I will share about famous ghost stories in Singapore and stories that I had experienced or by friends.
Today I will bring you the first most famous Singapore Army camp story that was rumour to happen in 1983.
The last event of a recruit training is the 16 Km route march. Before the march, the commander of Charlie Company asked if anyone was sick or not feeling well. Recruit Hu (Pronounced as who), who was down with flu but did not put up his hand.
Then the route march started. The platoons took turns to lead the company after each break during the route march. The pace of the march became too hot for some trainees and they became stragglers only to be picked up by a few instructors walking at the rear of the company. The landrover with the medical orderly was at the rear.
Somehow, Recruit Hu fell out and managed to slip out of view by taking cover in the forest. During subsequent rest breaks, there were head-counts. He was presumed to be with the medical orderly. The commanders went to the medical centre pick up recruit Hu only to discover. They organised an overnight night-search party for him, re-tracing the route taken but it was without results.
They stopped in front of a chinese temple to check with the caretaker. The caretaker responded that he did not see the recruit but added that the gods in the temple told him that if they could not get to him by daybreak, he would be dead.
Recruit Hu was missing till the evening of the next day where his own commander found recruit Hu body. He was kneeling on the floor with an big open wound to his stomach with a grin on his mouth. All of his organs had been taken out and arranged in an orderly manner just like how we would strip our rifles arranging the parts in an orderly manner. Those who were there were shocked beyond words.
The late Hu was promoted to NCO and cremated at Mount Vernon with full military honours.
The tales was passed down in every batch of new army recruits. Every batch had a new version and probably the each version was more exaggerated than the last.
The questions remain would be
1. How did the chinese temple caretaker know he will not survive if they could him?
2. Why did recruit Hu has a grin in his face? Shouldn't he feel the pain?
3. Who killed him and arrange his organs such a neat manner?
There is a part two to this but it was not as exciting. Maybe I will do a part two on this story tomorrow.
