Cyberchondria

Agra, India
August 12, 2018 2:19am CST
This is a state of mind where a person blindly trusts the internet for medical information and stops treatment, worrying about the side effects. Are you aware of this? I hope you are not suffering from this.

my brother was like that. when i went to Kuwait, he sent me a snail mail (computers were not yet 'incented') and told me he had rashes. i told him to read my nursing textbooks. the next time he sent me a letter, he diagnosed himself as having Hodgkin's Lymphoma. i told him to stop reading my books anymore. the rashes were just allergies.

That is the first time to read about this terminology. So there are now people who stops going to the doctors and trust any info on the net is the truth. Where in fact, internet is polluted with so much fallacies and misinformation besides the truth. I do hope that those people would realize that they still have to validate what they read online.

@amitkokiladitya I still believe that they should always validate any information they get online. I believe people with competent knowledge are still the best source of information.

I have never heard this complicated name before but I know of people who depend totally on internet for all their medical problems which is just not right. I have very often tried to make people understand but some people just will not listen.

@amitkokiladitya It is not that, I just don't like to take anything without looking at what it is and the possible side effects. Lately, most medicines cause more side effects than they fix the problem. If I don't like something I get back in touch with the doctor to try to resolve it.

@Shellyann36 resolving it is much better than stopping the treatment rightaway

I do check whenever my doctor prescribes something but get back to him with the information I have collected. Sometimes, you will not believe he changes the medicines. (lol)

Yes...just because he knows that now that you are so much concerned about the side effects the medicine will do more psychological damage than physical good.

For some diseases, there are many good suggestions on the Internet. I usually get some information about the disease from the Internet when I am sick. That really helped me.

I just hear it now. But I read it now too as you posted this. I search more. True, people now can search for answers on the net but even though the symptoms one has is the same as others, there will still be other factors to consider like patient history, family history. This information on the internet are helpful but still one has to see a doctor to really diagnose whatever one has.

@amitkokiladitya true. Internet is helpful so we get the whole picture but we still needs the expertise of the doctors and tests to make the proper diagnosis.

I used to read online about medical issues and finally learned how broad they are and inciting panic. Every symptom online means you have cancer and you are going to die unless you seek immediately medical attention. I exaggerate but it seems like that.
