London Bridge fell down

London Bridge, Great Ocean Road, Victoria

Another of the interesting geological features that we saw on the Great Ocean Drive in Victoria, Australia, was what is known as ‘London Bridge’. Prior to 15 January 1990, London Bridge was connected to the mainland so there were two arches. However that evening the main arch collapsed, leaving just one remaining. Although there were people at the site, no-one was injured. However two people were marooned on the new island and had to wait some hours before being rescued by helicopter. We saw quite a few people ignoring the signs to ‘stay behind the fence’. They really were taking their lives in their hands as the coastline in the area is very unstable.

How did the bridge collapse? Just a natural thing? No one knew how unstable?

It just happened - like the 'apostle' that collapsed one day out of the blue. There are many signs and quite a few barriers keeping people off the unstable cliffs or trying to keep people off. We saw quite a few ignoring or climbing over barriers.

It looks like a nice place to stop and have a look, but we should respect signage and keep our distance for our own good.

That's true. The cliff edge does collapse from time to time and the authorities are trying to keep people back for their own safety.

Great picture,,people and their stupidity amaze me..at Niagara Falls people in flip flops or sandals will go beyond the guide ropes to take a pic next to the roaring Niagara river. One slip, they will be in the water and likely over the falls. How more people don't get killed doing that is beyond me.

@JudyEv maybe not, but I don't really feel it is my place..if they want to kill themselves being idiots I guess it is their choice.

I know. It is just so stupid. And you'd get a mouthful of abuse if you said anything.

@snowy22315 I wouldn't say anything but I'd feel like it.

@judyev Wouldn't you feel just silly if you were marooned out there, especially with no facilities, and people on the mainland pointing at you and staring!!! Especially if the tv cameras arrived.

There are no bushes big enough to hide behind and what with all the shaking, noise and dust that must have occurred when the land collapsed, most people would be pretty desperate for a toilet.

@JudyEv And worse still, what if there were snakes on the tiny rock?

So it is London Bridge BECAUSE it's falling down?

No, it was London Bridge before it fell down - at least I think it was. You've made me unsure now.

@JudyEv I was thinking of the nursery rhyme "London Bridge is falling down, falling down, falling down"

Apparently it's now known as the London Arch.

@Sojourn Sorry, I wasn't sure how well-known the song would be in India.

Interesting view you have in there. It looks like man made but is of natural formation. I am just sad that the arch connecting to main land has collapse already. Could imagine how long that formation was formed and in just a few seconds its gone already.

@JudyEv But it still is a magnificent piece of rock floating to look at though. I just do not know houch longer will that piece of rock hang on in there. With the sea levels going up I think that is just a matter of time before that goes down as well.

Yes, one last big wave, one crash and millions of years of eroding is all over.

It is because London Bridge fell down so many years ago and it faded from people's memories. As a matter of fact, the coastline is still undermined by the waves.

The 'bridge' on the Great Ocean Road collapsed in 1990. Certainly the coastline continues to be eroded.

That is such a beautiful view to see. But why people do not mind the sign?

I think they reckon they can get a better photo if they got past the barrier.

@JudyEv Yes, it does. It also shows God was in control as no lives were lost in the collapse.

It seems incredible that there weren't any people on the bit that fell into the sea.

Some must have come close to going down with the 'bridge' if two were left on the other piece.

They are very foolish not to heed the warnings as the cliffs do break away from time to time.

@JudyEv In our country also so many accidents happen near falls and cliffs. People do not heed and they go to all risky spots to take a selfie.

I just can't understand why some don't take the signs fir cautions seriously. They will still take the risk just for the sake of instagramable photo.

It is very silly behaviour. Very foolish as the cliffs do crumble away from time to time.
