London Bridge fell down

Another of the interesting geological features that we saw on the Great Ocean Drive in Victoria, Australia, was what is known as ‘London Bridge’. Prior to 15 January 1990, London Bridge was connected to the mainland so there were two arches.
However that evening the main arch collapsed, leaving just one remaining. Although there were people at the site, no-one was injured. However two people were marooned on the new island and had to wait some hours before being rescued by helicopter.
We saw quite a few people ignoring the signs to ‘stay behind the fence’. They really were taking their lives in their hands as the coastline in the area is very unstable.

How did the bridge collapse? Just a natural thing? No one knew how unstable?

It just happened - like the 'apostle' that collapsed one day out of the blue. There are many signs and quite a few barriers keeping people off the unstable cliffs or trying to keep people off. We saw quite a few ignoring or climbing over barriers.

Great picture,,people and their stupidity amaze me..at Niagara Falls people in flip flops or sandals will go beyond the guide ropes to take a pic next to the roaring Niagara river. One slip, they will be in the water and likely over the falls. How more people don't get killed doing that is beyond me.

@JudyEv maybe not, but I don't really feel it is my place..if they want to kill themselves being idiots I guess it is their choice.

@snowy22315 I wouldn't say anything but I'd feel like it.

No, it was London Bridge before it fell down - at least I think it was. You've made me unsure now.

Interesting view you have in there. It looks like man made but is of natural formation. I am just sad that the arch connecting to main land has collapse already. Could imagine how long that formation was formed and in just a few seconds its gone already.

It is because London Bridge fell down so many years ago and it faded from people's memories. As a matter of fact, the coastline is still undermined by the waves.

I think they reckon they can get a better photo if they got past the barrier.

People should follow what they read on caution board. Glad that everyone is safe.

@JudyEv In our country also so many accidents happen near falls and cliffs. People do not heed and they go to all risky spots to take a selfie.

I just can't understand why some don't take the signs fir cautions seriously. They will still take the risk just for the sake of instagramable photo.

It is very silly behaviour. Very foolish as the cliffs do crumble away from time to time.
