Have you used pumice to clean a toilet?

We have seriously hard water and there's a lot of mineral deposit stains in our toilet bowl. I've heard for years about using a pumice stick to get the bowl clean, but never tried it before today. It worked a little bit differently than I expected. For one, the stick was a lot more fragile than I thought it would be, but that's part of how it works. As you scrub the crusted areas, the wet stick starts to disintegrate and turns into a grey paste. This paste is what scours away the stains, but it was a bit alarming to see how rapidly the stick was wearing away. I used up the entire stick and still had some areas with heavy mineral deposits, but the toilet bowl did look a LOT better. I think I'll get another one and work on the rest of the stains next week. I think 10 years of mineral deposits aren't going to all come off in one go. Have you ever cleaned a toilet this way?

I've never used pumice sticks. I found a certain really stinky product from the Dollar Tree to be effective.

@spiderdust I'm trying to remember. Was the bottle green? If I see it next time I'm there, I'll check in again.

@TheHorse Oh, was it their knockoff CLR? I think I have a spray bottle of that. I actually have to stop at Dollar Tree today, I'll take a peek.

Which one? I buy their purple foaming bathroom cleaner, but that only works for the outside of the toilet.

It should, although even a pumice stone from the health & beauty section could work (although I believe this one is cheaper).

@thislittlepennyearns I still need to get groceries for this week. I've been trying to stretch out what we have so I can put the money towards birthday stuff, but there's still that eternal need for milk and eggs and bread every day.

I want to say that I've seen those, but I can't remember where... possibly the hardware store.

I use a cut lemon with tons of salt on it and it does a very good job.

Oh wow...that is a great hint Marlina...how long do you have to scrub the tiles...I have issue with tiles...if it works on them, I am out of woods kinda.

Never heard of this. I use Pine Sol and scrub out the inside.

Pine Sol works well to freshen the toilet, but my toilet brush just couldn't handle these calcium deposits.

And here I thought pumice stones are as hard as can be.

I am also scared of them...coz once the scratches come in the ceramic bowl, there will be more stains.

I think they can be. Can't one use them to remove foot callouses and such like?

@vandana7 That's what's nice about this, it doesn't scratch the ceramic.

I haven't had much success with that, but we do have really hard water. For me, it just stained the calcium deposits brown.

I wouldn't try something sharp. I mean, there can be scratches on ceramic bowl and then we would be in for greater problem. I don't know I prefer marlina's solution.

This isn't sharp at all. Like I said, once the stone was wet and rubbed against the ceramic bowl, it turned into a paste.
