My red mug is already broken. This red mug was given to me by my sister when our father died in 1996. It was given to her by a female neighbor. The red mug has thick ceramics. I washed it this morning and I placed it in the rack but it tumbled down. I even tried to catch it when it fell but I was not able to. What I did was, I told my sister that I will break a small glass to pair with the broken mug. My son has not yet left for school and we Filipinos have this superstitious belief that when something is broken, we must also break another to pair with the mug. I had to hit the glass so hard to the cemented wall at the back; after 5 tries, it broke. Then my red mug: 3 tries and it broke. Do you have this practice too, to counteract any bad luck? We do.

It is all right. We don't live in the same country or region anyway, but do you have a belief about breaking something by accident?

@ridingbet Breaking of glassware are taken as inauspicious in some regions of country. Though I myself don't believe in this.

This is the first time I hear about this superstition. It's a very long time I do not break something.

same here. Haven't heard of it at all. Not the whole country has that belief so I think it's only in their region.

@toniganzon This is possible, I was born in the north of Italy, we have a lot less superstitions than in the south.

It is right to say too that the superstition is only practiced here in our region.

Wow really? I think that belief is localised as I have never heard of such in this city at all. I don't think the whole country shares the same superstitious beliefs.

@anya12adwi to counterbalance the bad luck that comes with the breaking of the mug. but if it is not your custom then it is okay. we believe though in counteracting any possibilities of bad luck

the only superstition i heard of is about broken mirrors and bad luck. this is the first time i'm reading about it broken mugs. if the red mug was already broken, why did you have to break it again? that small glass must be pretty thick it took 5 tries to break it. does this breaking in pairs only apply to mugs, cups and glasses?

It doesn't necessarily mean mug. Anything that is broken should be paired with another. Example : if I broke a glass, that should be paired with another breakable item, not necessarily a glass too. It is a belief we practice. The mug fell down and broke and that is an accident. We connote that as an "accident " that might happen, so in order for that "accident " to not happen, we have to intentionally break another. I hope you get what I mean, even though I may not be able to express it well in English. The glass is the blend 45 small glass that is thick.
