Hours of practice for a few moments of glory

The photo has nothing to do with the discussion. @lovinangelsinstead21 put up an interesting discussion which you can check out here: http://www.mylot.com/post/3206648/ so-how-the-heck. (You’ll need to close the gap.) The clip is to an ice-skating performance of Ekaterina Gordeeva and her late husband, Sergei Grinkov. At the end of the clip Gordeeva is spun and seems to be thrown away from her partner. My friend told me it’s called a triple throw. I couldn’t believe that girl was actually going to land on her feet – sorry, skates. I was pondering later on how much practice it would have taken for the movement to be perfected. How many times she must have fallen and how much courage it would have taken to push through the pain and failure to eventually achieve such a wonderful performance. It was around this point that I remembered the 1992 Olympics held in Barcelona when an archer, Antonio Rebollo, shot an arrow which had been lit by the Olympic torch, high into the darkening sky and into the Olympic cauldron thus lighting the flame. Watching the YouTube clip of that historic moment made shivers go up and down my spine. Here is the link if you want to be impressed by this guy’s talent. Like Gordeeva and Grinov, I guess it took a lot of arrows before he perfected his shot. Do you have a favourite Olympic moment? Here's the link to the Olympic flame moment.

I have always been awed by figure skating. Moreso because to me what those skaters do seem impossible - I couldn't even dream of performing such feats.

I agree. How they manage to do some of these movements is beyond me.

Cannot think of any Olympic moment now but I know that there have been some really impressive ones. Somewhere in the back of my mind I remember the gymnastics of Mary Lou Retton if I have her name right and going to work in the morning back in NYC all those years ago with the Daily New headline Well hello Mary Lou.

I love watching the opening ceremonies and the closing ceremonies. They are often the best part of the Olympics!

@JudyEv I agree with that 100%. Imagine if the area hosting the Olympics put the money they invested in the Opening and Closing ceremonies for their country/state they would probably end homelessness in that particular area.

They go to such a lot of trouble and spend millions on these ceremonies. In a way it's great but sometimes it seems a huge lot of money to spend when there are so many needy people in the world.

It is amazing when watching Figure Skating the finess and practice it must take. Especially to be able to perform in such a competition as this. So Fun to watch

That gave me the goosebumps to see it all over again thank you. I had almost forgotten it except for when Freddie Mercury and Montserrat Caballe sang together their "Barcelona" song. Again thanks for mentioning it.

@JudyEv Barcelona is not what it was at least not at this very moment. I mean the city is still itself but people are ruining bits and pieces of it with their bad ways of being. So its nice to remember something like this as its a very beautiful City.

That was indeed a great moment for this archer. In our life most of our time is spent on preparation. We toil in the kitchen for hours and that is devoured in minutes. I plan that Xmas party for kids months ahead and it is all over in ours. Weddings are yet another event that eats up time. Life goes on

Wow, I have had so many, maybe Nadia Comanici is one of my favorites or Mary Lou Retton landing the vault with that hurt leg, I love every moment of the Olympics.

There are breathtaking moments in sport. I am fascinated by figure skating so beautiful and they make it seem effortless but yes it must take extreme courage and hours of hard work for memorable moments shown to us.

Apparently there was once an ice-rink in our town but well before my time. I never even got to roller-skate.

I remember seeing both on YouTube. As you know, my favorite is figure skating, and I can attest that it takes hours and hours of practice, falls, broken bones, and passion. My favorite was the competition between the two Russian figure skaters in our last Olympics.

I think the arrow flew into the torch but it was lit electronically rather than directly by his flame-arrow - it looked fantastic though

That is impressive. I was living in Vancouver when the 2010 Winter Olympics took place. No really impressive opening ceremony stunts but here is a photo of the Oympic Cauldron. It was lit in the Olympic Stadium but was later moved to the waterfront. This photo was taken on July 1st 2010 when the city re-lit it for Canada Day.
