Happy Saturday to all, from this side of earth, how is everyone?
I suddenly remembered a former clinical coordinator, who was corrected on the spot by the vice president of the school during an orientation activity, several years ago.
Miss LC, our former clinical coordinator who is now a Nurse III in the tertiary hospital where we have our duty on, communicated with the students as “okay GUYS!” and this was what our vice president celled her attention about.
Our VP, Madam WRG, pointblank rectified Miss LC to not refer the students as ‘guys’ because she holds a higher position in the college of nursing, and calling the students ‘guys’ might mean she is a classmate, groupmate, or buddies with them. Miss LC seem to be at level with the students.
I believe the teachers should not call their students as ‘guys’ or ‘buddies’. But still, there are some full-time instructors who refer their students as ‘guys’.
In this site, (not to offend anyone), would you like to be referred by somebody as ‘guys’ even though it is your first time to interact with them?
For me, I would not want to; but to each his own though.

"Guys" should only refer to "boys" and not girls, I think the Vice President did the right thing to correct her. You expect from a "teacher" to use an appropriate language. As I am a woman, I feel offended if someone use the term "guy" interacting with me.

@ridingbet Guys anyway is only for male, the dictionary is very specific on this, so to address to women saying "guys" is not only inappropriate, is offensive.

@LadyDuck that is also my notion. even some female students refer to their female classmates as 'guys' that is why i sometimes butt in to their conversation and say "why guys when you are ladies?"

we both feel the same way. i think because i am already 58 years old, i feel i have to address the people younger than me with a MISS or MISTER or 'hijo' or 'hija' but not GUYS.

I don't like to call people guys. I also find it strange when people call me that. Maybe they are used to calling others like this.

since your avatar is that of a female, i would never imagine somebody here calls you a 'guy'.

@ridingbet I do my best to be as respectful to them as I expect them to be with me.

@DWDavis i agree with you. although there will come a time that we and our students will be colleagues, they still show respect upon us.

Sometimes when I give lecture, I refer them 'guys' because I thought of becoming closer to them, that they don't feel ashame to interact to me.

Hmm, they're not my students
They are participants in lecture seminar where I'm invited as lecturer or speaker.
Mostly lecture on literature.

@ilocosboy well, if they are not your students, i think it would be fine addressing them as 'guys', because maybe you and they are of age level?

maybe if the teacher and the students are already a collective group, they call each other 'guys'. but i don't know why i don't call my students like that.

@YrNemo the colleagues of my son who teach high school and Grade 12, don't call their students 'guys' according to my son. the students follow what the principal told them and the students to show respect even by addressing their teachers with SIR or MA'AM. maybe guys can be mentioned by the students among themselves, but not teacher to student

It depends on how one was brought up I guess. With a strict upbringing, one would expect things differently. The younger generations are more easy going. You should see young teachers in some secondary colleges here, teaching year 7-12. They are so young that I guess, deep down, they are still a kid themselves, still remember how their year 11-12 teachers & uni lecturers often addressed them exactly that same way.

we both belong, i too belong to old school. for me, i do not even use the term guys with my colleagues. i seem to be 'old' enough to call my students and colleagues as GUYS because basically, i am way older than them.

I don't see any thing wrong with this. Sometimes teacher needs to show to the students that she/he is not that high, and she/he is approachable. My BF calls his students as guys, I call mine as "Ladies and Gentlemen". but I don't find a professor calling guys offensive as long as she/he knows what her/his ground is.

@ridingbet well as I always say, different folks with different strokes. I think it is also the manner of teaching, and how well a teacher teaches his/her students. and it is good that at least they have you.

i don't call my students as 'guys' even though they are males and females, and i believe i am still approachable to them. in fact, they approach me more than the condescending colleague we have who calls her students as GUYS because basically, she cannot memorize their surnames.

I don't mind. As long as he/she gives a fun, useful lecture.
