No doubt this is a cliched statement when I talk about the lifestyle of the rich and famous but this thought came to mind when I was distressed looking at the floods in Kerala where people have lost everything including their houses. And here is someone who has loads of cars, heavy investment in real estate, most expensive watches in the world, heavy investment in shares and last but not the least he owns loads of pens of which a Montblanc Honore de Balzac that costs around Rs. 70,000/- My pens write well and considering most do their writing online I simply fail to understand why invest in such expensive pens. And why own so many cars? Are the rich recognised only by their possessions and given a place in society?

A natural disaster does not discriminate - it does not care if you are rich or poor. And in this case, a weathy person with the best of "things" has much to lose in such a flood. I can understand wanting a "collection" - to each their own when it comes to interests - but yah, I could think of better ways to make use of excess money!

If you look at the rich they are packed with idiosyncrasies. Why on earth would they store cars and not make use of them, own gold by the kilos, have dozen homes all over the world.................Is that not a kind of illness that needs treatment?

The rich will probably be "shocked " to discover that when they die - all of their treasures will be left behind for someone else to enjoy. If I happened to be rich, I would help as many as I could , while maintaining a decent lifestyle.

There is competition created by society and these people will stop at nothing to join that competition. One of our guys here is the richest in the world. As long as wealth is not put to good use it is like storing stones.

Very philosophical question. I guess material things make them looked rich but I believe that he can be appreciated more if he knows how to share some of his wealth to many who needs help.

Soceity is totally responsible for respecting those that are rich. They are 'garlanded' everywhere they go

I hope these rich people can help the poor with their extra money. It would make more sense.

What baffles me is why in the first place they amass all that stuff which is never used. What society standard is this?

@allknowing I think he is showing off his wealth. There are many rich people who do some good deeds. He should learn from them.

I can't understand this either but I guess the collections of the rich differ only in their value from the collections of the not-so-rich.

But that difference in value I suppose gives them that VIP tag

It's the way some people flaunt their richness. But in the eyes of God, each and every person is equal. Natural calamities prove it right that nothing beyond God

@anamika161088 It's time society starts giving less importance to those who amass wealth and not use it for good purposes,

@allknowing I wonder the same. The fear of losing riches can keep them from sleeping a good nights sleep

Nobody buys a Montblanc pen for himself, it is the kind of gift that people are receiving as a birthday present or when they retire, and most of the time it will stay in the gift box and will be never used, there is a lot of time that I have not seen somebody having a gold Montblanc pen, people are more focused on the last iPhone today. You see still some expensive watches though, it is used as a differentiation sign at a time where everybody wears the same clothes in the streets, and that suits and ties are only for bank employees, drivers and caretakers in everyday life. Having a lot of cars does not tell if somebody is rich. It may be only somebody collecting cars. I have a friend having about 40 English cars, he is not that rich. Most of the time here, only new richs drive luxury cars ; or your hairdresser : as a car seller told me, everybody can own a Ferrari or a BMW, the problem is just to find a way to get a loan for it ; people born rich are buying small cars and are not showing that they are rich. I met a few billionaires born billionaires, and all of them were very simple people not showing off. It is good for movie stars and owners of startups, who will perhaps end their life as poor as they were born.

You hit the nail on the head. It is the upstarts that go about flaunting their wealth. Born rich do not need to show off.

When someone gets bored they start to invest their money in something new regardless if there is any use for him in doing so. So, the fact that some people buy expensive watches and pens is just proof of that.

Is it not a waste of money going in for such expensive things only to be kept in 'show cases'?
