Where Eagles Dare(1968) is a classic movie based on a novel with same name written by Alistair MacLean.
It has Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood in major roles, and directed by Brian G. Hutton and produced by Elliott Kastner. The banner is MGM.
Movie Plot in brief
During World War II, in year 1943-44, a U.S Army Brigadier General George Carnaby (Robert Beatty) is captured by the Germans when his aircraft is shot down on way to Crete. He is taken for interrogation to the Schloss Adler, a fortress high in the Alps of southern Bavaria. A team led by Major John Smith (Richard Burton) and U.S. Army Ranger Lieutenant Morris Schaffer (Clint Eastwood), guided by by Colonel Turner (Patrick Wymark) and Admiral Rolland (Michael Hordern) of MI6 plans to rescue Carnaby, through covert action. MI6 Agent Mary Elison (Mary Ure), known only to Major Smith also assists in the mission.
The team traverses through tricky terrain, dangerous foes and some superb stunts to achive their aim. Carnaby is rescued, but Smith and Schaffer have a feeling that there is a German helper within MI6. Finally, this German helper is identified as Colonel Turner. Smith exposes Turner. Turner tries to shoot Smith with a STEN Gun given to him by Rolland. However, his firing pin had been previously removed.
Turner is then permitted by Smith to suicide by jumping out of the plane they all are traveling without parachute, so that his honor is saved.
The movie was well received in both US and UK. It earned $6,560,000 in rentals at the North American box office during its first year of release. The movie was the 13th most popular movie at the US box office and 7th most popular at the UK box office in 1969. Overall, the movie made a good profit, and yours truly saw this 35 years after its release on a DVD.(2003)
I feel the movie was well directed. The cable car stunt and other action and escape sequences were well enacted. Richard Burton and Eastwood performed greatly, though at times Eastwood seems a bit stiff.
Overall, a must watch, and I would like to see it some day again.

I like this movie, but I was surprised to see that some critics rate it as one of the best war movies of all time. One thing I always noticed was the scene with a helicopter. That's anachronistic - that type of helicopter didn't exist during WW2.
