Ten Movies I Wish I'd Never Seen: The Graduate (#5)

It's time for another one of those widely-heralded classic movies that I saw and really didn't care for. I've been genuinely surprised over the past couple of days, mentioning movies that I didn't care for that I thought would bring the wrath of Khan and the movie fans down on me. It didn't happen; and, in fact, I saw a lot of people agree with me. I think my luck is going to run out today. Here's the next movie. #5: The Graduate Get the soundtrack. Skip the film. I mean, when the memorable quote from the film is, "Just one word -- plastics", you know you're in trouble. I think the problem I have with this movie is one of the two of us came along at the wrong time. Obviously in 1967 I was way too young to see such an "adult" film. Then, when I finally did see it (on a TMC Oscar marathon), I was probably too old. Plus, who wants to get seduced by Mel Brooks' wife???? Yes, it's an iconic film. It's just not for me. But here's to you, Mrs. Robinson and everyone else who does enjoy it. The Graduate Directed by Mike Nichols Released in 1967 What a song:

I've never seen it. But they remade it with Jennifer Anniston and Mark Ruffalo..

Rumor Has It is not a remake. It's inspired by The Graduate. Anniston believes that her mother and grandmother may be the inspiration for the original 1963 novel The Graduate.

@JohnRoberts Its the same story. Basically. Might as well be a remake. Just because it has a different title, doesn't mean its not a remake. Its just further proof that Hollywood is out of ideas.

I saw this movie so long ago that I have no impression one way or another so that probably means overrated to me. Trivia: Doris Day was the original choice to play Mrs. Robinson but her husband-manager Terry Melcher turned it down because it wasn't fitting her goody goody image.

With you being the movie buff I would have thought this might have been the one where you laughed at me and asked what was wrong. It's going to be interesting when I get to the final group, the critically-acclaimed movies that I loved, to get your opinions on those movies. There are some on the final list that make everyone's list of "best movies" as well as everyone else's list of "most overrated movies ever." We'll see once that starts. Speaking of trivia, I also read that "Mrs. Robinson" was originally "Mrs. Roosevelt," but Mike Nichols asked Paul Simon to change it from Roosevelt to Robinson.

@FourWalls Most times I think movies like The Graduate are overrated. For example every just loves ET and my reaction was so what?

I think I saw some of this movie, but all of it. I don't really care for it either.

I adored this movie. Always will love it, not sure why.

That's the thing. I can't really put my finger on why I didn't like it. You know, seeing a "classic" movie that "everybody" is supposed to "love" puts pressure on the viewer: "Okay, I have to like this movie or else get fitted for a dunce cap!"

@FourWalls I think for me, liking the film is just because of the time I was living in. Good memories of a more youthful carefree time kind of when Dustin was all the rage.

Have to agree . Saw it for the first time a couple of years ago . I thought it was OK but didn't measure up to all the hype. The best thing about it is the soundtrack.

I saw it on television and it didn't strike me as special in any way.
