Did you make yourself an "afternoon snack" when you got home from school?

I was thinking about my younger days this morning and remembering that I always made myself an afternoon snack when I got home from school. This was in Chicago, so it would have been my 4th through 12th grade years. My default snack was Lipton Chicken Noodle Soup. I sill keep some around the house to this day. Yesterday, before cycling over to see my friend's booth at a local "art walk," I made an afternoon snack, but it was quite different from what I made in my younger days. Pardon the blurry picture, but let me see if I can remember what I put in it: olive oil, my last egg, avocado, tomato, yellow onion, Swiss cheese, dry salami, green pepper, salt and pepper. Anyway, did you make yourself a snack when you came home from school in your younger days? I was a "latch key kid," and it was a part of my ritual, along with watching the Flintstones and then heading outside to play football with my friends from the "block."

I was a 'key child' (this is the translation of the German term), too, from the age of 10 onwards. I don't remember my eating habits from that time. Why would I? I did not watch TV. We didn't have a TV set and I knew nobody who had one. This changed when I was ~13 years old. We moved to a house where a couple owned a TV set. I was allowed to visit them occasionally and watch with them. I always returned home with red eyes because it was pitch dark when the TV was on. People thought in those days that this was the correct way to watch films. Maybe because it's always dark in cinemas, too.

I hadn't thought about that. I wonder if most Americans watched TV in the dark too.

@jstory07 I was already at uni when my mother decided to buy one. That means I grew up more or less without TV. I didn't suffer!

Sometimes I did and other times not. Often I would just pop some bread into the toaster if I did.

Oh, at my one friend's house (his dad was from India), we'd have "Indian Toast" (we made up the name). Toast with butter, garlic salt, paprika, and something else...maybe curry powder...

@TheHorse That sounds like it could be good. I often sprinkle garlic salt on a slice of buttered toast.

I don't remember often having after school snacks when I was a kid. I do have them now though. Popcorn or peanuts is normally the snack menu.

Both sound good. Did you ever hear the words, "I don't want to spoil you dinner"? If it was too late in the afternoon, I might hear that and get no snack. But usually I was home before my parents were.

@TheHorse That's sad dear. I never heard that with my mom I heard it only when I was living with my aunt. She was mean.

It was mighty yummy. You've had a positive influence on my life. I'm watching both the Raiders and the 'Niners and enjoying both games. I've gotten away from pro football, but actually still enjoy watching.

I would usually have a slice or two of Vegemite on bread. Sometimes Mum would let me have a slice of cake.

@TheHorse I used to go down to the cowshed about 5pm when Mum was milking the house-cows. There was a Vegemite jar (it was then sold in glass jars) on the bench and Mum would milk into it and I'd drink the milk warm. Then I'd rinse the glass under the tap where the water came from the farm dam and upend it on the bench for next time. I probably ingested my fair share of germs in those days which might have stood me in good stead as I'm rarely ill - touch wood.

@TheHorse It was neither. I was hungry I cooked, no one could cook or would even try. I ate a lot of cereal, sandwiches and pot pies back them. Its why I can cook a rock now and make it taste good. but I do not eat cereal, pot pies and rarely sandwiches.

I and my brother used to make snacks after school. It used be mostly sandwich or Dosa ( Indian pancake) or fruit salad or custard, Now my daughters also do the same. They make it and that gives me time to do other stuff. It is good if they are independent from young age.

No. Because usually I am feeling tired/exhausted after school. Plus, I had to do a lot of homework and studying.

Our setup was a little bit different, my parents being very busy just leave money to our maid, when me and my siblings arrive from school (I have an elder sister and a younger brother) the 3 of us decide what we would like for " merienda" or afternoon snack, we tell the maid what we want and she buys it. She then lists all the expenses and show it to our parents when they arrive at night. We hardly prepare it ourselves, the maid does everything while we open our books to do homework or watch cartoons. " merienda" is very important for Filipinos, it's like a fourth meal.

I don't remember ever having a snack when we came home from school. I just remember eating supper at about 5:30 so my parents could start grading papers and I could practice piano. Now, I carry a banana to work so I can have a healthy snack before starting home. Otherwise I will stop at the store and buy chocolate or ice cream or something else unhealthy.

@TheHorse So you lived in Chicago. You were my neighbor 8 hours by car. I was born and grew up in Minneapolis. I do not know if when growing up if I had a snack or not. Now, I eat two meals and then take my meds so do not eat a snack after I take my meds.
