Did you know that there are different types of lightning? I had heard this on the Science channel when watching Strange Evidence one night and decided it was time to do some research.
There is ground to cloud both negative and positive, cloud to air, anvil crawlers, bead and ribbon types, sheet, intrancloud and bolt from the blue just to name a few. The bolt from the blue type is interesting because it occurs far away from its parent thunderstorm. Sprites and jets is another one. These are electrical discharges that occur up above an active thunderstorm. These may appear as vertical red columns and are in conjunction with a reaction to positive cloud to ground lightning. There is a rare type called ball lightning. This is rather rare and is described as a floating, illuminated sphere that may move fast and disappear suddenly or within some minutes.
I love to see bolts of lightning but only when I am safe inside.

I love to watch Lighting storms but we do not have that many in the UK. I saw some brilliant storms in NC when I visited.
