Every year around the end of September or early October, our church holds its Annual Fall Festival. This year will be the 64th year. The festival features games, kids rides, bouncy houses, a cake auction, a jailhouse, plenty of good food provided by the Knights of Columbus and the Hispanic congregation, and more baked goods than you can shake a stick at. The heart of the festival is the gift basket raffle. The schools contribution to the festival is that each class donates money to create a basket to be raffled off. The Knights, the Lady's Guild, and several other groups also put together and donate baskets. This year, my wife and I decided that on top of my class basket, our company, River Sailor Literary, would donate a basket built around my books and reading. Our baskets theme is "My Weekend is all Booked Up." We put the basket together at home and took pictures of it. Hopefully, we can recreate it once we take everything to the church. Does your church or group have any similar activities during the year?

I used to love events like fall carnivals. The cake walk was one of my favorite parts. I don't belong to such groups these days.

We used to do a cake walk but over the years interest waned and someone suggested we get prominent members of the congregation to bake (or help bake) the cakes and auction them off. It was a great success last year.

@DWDavis A cake auction might be fun though not so action oriented. I'm glad your cake auction did well.

That is a great fundraiser and I'd want your basket of books. We go to so many. The last was to raise money for the students of our alma mater.

I am hoping seeing the books are all signed by me and I am a member of the parish that the basket will generate a lot of interest and a lot of ticket sales.

Sounds fun and a neat way to get some funding. I could not go though. I would end up in the jailhouse. I make bad jokes.

@DWDavis Oh OK, that does sound like fun. I would not mind a few minutes in jail for a good cause. Also I have to do another bad joke. It kind of teaches like real life. Just pay someone off and they will let you out.

The jailhouse is a fun thing. Someone "bribes" the sheriff into locking you up and then you have to raise a matching amount to get out. To prevent anyone from staying in too long, the maximum match is set at $2 no matter how big the "bribe."

My students saw this picture today and already want to convince their parents to put all their tickets in my box in hopes of winning the books and the tablet.

The basket is all to my wife's credit. She worked on the layout over and over until she thought it was just right. Now I have to try and recreate it at the church tomorrow.

@wolfgirl569 I did, and it was. After my parent volunteer helped me set it up and wrap it, I took another picture.

I hope it catches enough attention and people put a lot of their raffle tickets in my box.

The VA women's open house features a lot of themed baskets like that, usually made by various clinics or departments in the hospital, to be given out as door prizes. This year I won the "Redbox" movie night prize, which had DVDs, popcorn, candy, soft drinks, and a blanket and neck pillow in it.

That all sounds like such fun. You must go to a large church. Our's is so small like so many rural churches these days.

When I was little we always had Harvest Festival. At both church and school we'd be encouraged to donate non-perishable food which would then be boxed up for local poor people. I always felt very proud taking my tin of baked beans or whatever to the front. Inevitably we always ended up with a box because we were poor!

So nice you are having these fundraisers. I do not go to church lately or belong to any group. I will be moving soon so maybe there we will have some.
