Has anyone dealt with a cat who had struvite crystals? What did you end up doing to prevent it from happening again?

My cat Hades.

I know surgery is an option. I do know there is certain food specifically for it. My cat has gotten it for a 2nd time and I'm hoping there isn't a next. The surgery is awfully expensive unfortunately. I'd like to hear all stories you have about it even if it wasn't successful. Thank you!

Feeding canned food is supposed to help prevent them.

I've heard. It's very hard. I may have to put him through the surgery.

Make the cat drink alot of fluids because formed crystals comes from salt.

@BriHennessey @dave121495 is correct; just like when humans get kidney stones and bladder infections, it is because of too much salt and not enough liquids to flush the system. Definitely a change of food plus you can go to Chewey.com and get a product called HomeoPet (a UTI supplement. It has 450 drops in the bottle and costs $7.99. It will give you instructions on how many drops per day (oral syringe) to give. It breaks up the crystals that can cause the bladder stones.

I know them drinking a lot of water helps but where did you hear or read that it comes from salt? I just haven't read anything about it being from salt yet. My cat Hades is definitely going to be on a strict wet food diet from now on.

usually they do recommend the dietary change, not surgery.. i had 2 boys with FUS which is similar, and a diet change cleared it up.

The diet only does so much for some. After the 3rd blockage they do recommend surgery but I am doing my best to prevent that. I'm thinking of putting him on a raw diet. I did research and saw it is a good route to getting rid of crystals for good.

Yes, my cat has gotten them. He eats prescription catfood recommended by the vet. Milo eats Royal Canin SO and has had no more crystals since he has been on it..about two years. It is not cheap either..but a grain free alternative is supposed to be good for prevention as well..I have tried other foods that are supposed to be good for crystals but he did not like any of them.

Thank you for responding! May I ask how many time your cat has gotten it? It's definitely not cheap. I just started my cat on just wet food. I decided to go the cheaper route and found a brand that is specifically made for urinary support.

@BriHennessey This is his regular diet. I would call your vet and ask for recommendations. It is Royal Canin Urinary SO. The cheapest way to get it is to have it shipped from Chewy.com. a bag will be shipped about every six weeks and it costs about 40 dollars. I wouldn't just give the cat wet food without checking with the vet on the brand you should be using, although if your cat likes what you are feeding him..then it may work.

@snowy22315 Sorry I should have phrased that better. I was wondering how many times has your cat gotten struvite crystals/ a blockage? I know Chewy very well. It's literally the best on Earth to get pet food, haha! Vets only recommend what they have. I'm very strict with ingredients and there are too many fillers. My cats (6 total) have been fed a variety of food and I'm trying to stick with just one. I'm thinking of a raw diet. I should probably get the wet food from the vet for now till I find a better one. I just want them to have the best food possible without having to pay so much. A 2nd job comes into question now, haha.

You should also switch your cats to bottled water. You can't be sure of what is in your tap water. Also bottled water is more apt to increase their water intake as it tastes better. You're going to have to be more careful about reading the labels on your cat food. Strictly canned is okay but it isn't good for their teeth, they need the toughness to clean their teeth. I have neighbors who have a pet supply chain, I'll talk to them an see what they recommend for your cat.

I never heard of these struvite crystrals in cats. All I do is mostly feed my cat dry food. I don't like the smell of canned food and it doesn't last as long as the dry food. I guess I'm lucky that she doesn't have this condition. Sorry to hear about your cat. I hope things are better now

I switched to can food, and high quality dry food. I also put a water bowls, in plastic, metal, glass and even one with a fountain to tempt him to drink more. 2 yrs down the road, and he is fine.
