A major highlight of the 2018 Preston Comic Con was the screening of this 45 minute fan-movie, and a chance to meet some of the cast and crew behind it.
The film is a spoof of Goldeneye, not the James Bond movie but the Nintendo 64 computer game the movie generated.
The Goldeneye game, released in 1997, was a pioneering game in the first person shooter field, enabling multiple players to view the same scene from different points of view, and the game could therefore be played interactively. It is still regarded by many as the greatest computer game of all time though its revolutionary multi-player formula has been dwarfed through games like Doom.
The Going For Goldeneye comedy film envisages players still attending World championship tournaments in Goldeneye play decades after the game came out. The World champion, known only as Ethan, has held the title for 19 years, but a young hopeful called Ben, who idolizes Ethan, has become very proficient in the game and the media manipulates him into entering the competition, along with a school bully he feared all his life.
The film follows the Spinal Tap mockumentary formula as it follows the players round in the build up to the epic World Championship, taking place in Yorkshire. The film is side-splittingly funny, and also shows a genuine nostalgic affection for the game. The competition is both funny and genuinely exciting, with the characters learning as it progresses that there is more to life than their gaming consoles.
Filmed in three days flat in two houses and their gardens, the film looks very professional, with a highly talented cast who clearly enjoy what they are doing too.
Astonishingly, everyone who came to the screening was given a free blue ray copy of the movie to take home.

@arthurchappell Today's photo/video technology allows groups on small budgets to produce very high quality work. I think this is a real step forward for the field.
