Well done, Banksy

A framed version of Banksy's famous mural "Girl with a Red Balloon" was sold at auction at Sotheby's in London last night. The sale price reached £1 million and the hammer went down. Then - as the audience and the sales team watched - something very strange happened to the artwork as it hung on the wall. Unknown to anyone in the room, the frame contained a hidden shredder, which proceeded to work at that very moment. The million-pound artwork promptly disappeared through the base of the frame to land on the floor in thin strips. The Sotheby's directors had to admit that they'd been "Banksy'd". The thing about Bansky is that nobody knows who he is. His amazing artworks - which are made from sprayed stencils - just appear overnight on city walls. They often make a profound social statement and are much loved by local residents. This shredding stunt is just what one might have expected from Bansky - but on this occasion nobody did! Apart from Bansky himself of course, who sent an Instagram with the message "Going, Going, Gone".

Oh! It's sad to see such wonderful artwork go in pieces. I hope the buyer got his money back.

Banksy knows that his artworks are temporary - they are often on walls that are later washed clean or even demolished.

@indexer Oh! You mean to say that it was auctioned as a performance art and the buyer was aware of it. It is a huge money.

@arunima25 I don't know all the details! I would expect that it is Sotheby's who will have to sort out the money side of all this. I just thought it was a brilliant stunt by an artist who is nothing if not original.

Sounds like Banksy is such a mysterious street artist ! It is beyond me why Banksy shredded the artwork worth million-pound after auction .

A work of art is only worth what somebody is prepared to pay for it. In this case, the piece was a small-scale copy of the work you can see in the photo above. Bansky uses stencils, which means that an artwork could be copied many times over. The value lies in the concept, rather than the actual physical piece.

I don't know what to say about this story. I'm still in shock from imagining the shock of seeing a painting disappearing after I had to been the one to bid paying a million pounds for it. So there really is a person called "Banksy"? How can you not catch somebody painting on a wall? Surely a homeless person must have seen him or her.

That was a million pounds saved by the buyer.
