Welcome to today's history edition. It's another varied history day with school, revolution, movies, and a nuclear accident.
Everything must have a beginning in order for it to have a middle and an end. Though in some cases, we hope the end is a long way off. This first event in history, is the opening of the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland. It started with seven professors and fifty midshipmen. Commodore Perry outlined the first five-year curriculum which would include the first and last years on land and the middle three at sea. Today the Navy turns 243 years old. Happy Birthday Navy and Marine Corps!
The United States Naval Academy has come a long way since those first days, with the many events midshipmen are involved in, including football. One of the oldest rivalries in military football history is the Army/Navy game. It's also a four-year school now, versus the five years it started as.
Next is the end of an era as a revolution took place in China, known as the Xinhai Revolution or the China Revolution of 1911. This was brought about because of mishandling of the Railway Protection Movement. It would end with the abduction of six-year-old Puyi, the last emperor of China, and thus began the Republic of China as we have it today.
Have you watched a movie where one of the main characters had already passed before it made its screen debut? Think Star Wars the Last Jedi with Carrie Fisher in her last role before she passed. This next film is the same in that regard. The film 'Giant' premiered in 1956 and was the last movie James Dean played in before he was killed in a car accident after he completed his work on the film.
The last historical note for today was a year later, 1957, when a fuel cartridge burst in one of the channels of England's Windscale weapons facility catching fire and sending iodine-131 radioactive contaminants into the air. This was the first nuclear incident that caused eleven tons of uranium to be set ablaze. It was contained two days later.
There you have this day in history. How will today play out in history. Thanks for reading.
