An Overnighter No Longer!

Not officially yet, but i am sooo incredibly happy to announce that as of January 12th, 2019 I will work an earlier shift and NOT the disgusting overnight I have been enduring for the past 3 ish months. (Although it feels like it has been much longer). In government 24 hour jobs, the “shift bid” is a dramatic and seniority-based and drawn out process. I was #24 out of 26 in seniority so i was afraid my options would be bad. But i has a few decent choices surprisingly. I will be working Weds through Saturday, alternating between a 2pm-midnight and 330pm-0130am and have Sundays, Mondays and Tuesdays off. I am so stoked not to have to work the late shift next year. I hate it so much. I don’t hate the job but the hours have been wearing me down so badly. I figured out I only have 29 more 10pm-8am shifts before switching over to the new schedule. Ha! How does your job determine who works what shift? Is it seniority based as well? Do you like your current one?

I am now retired, but when I worked we did not have night shifts.

What is your work? Its good the nature of my work doesn't require shifting. I work only from 8am to 5pm and overnight sometimes.

Nice. I work in a government / public safety position so it is open 24 hours. What kind of work do you do?

It's nice that you won't have to worry about working overnight anymore. For the moment, I am not working, but will be working from home soon. I'll be able to chose my shifts. I'll be working days.

In contrary to your views, I really love night shift! Just because for nurses it’s less drama. I am very happy for you though. :)

Good for you, I'm glad that this is coming soon. I would find those hours tiring also. My new job that I start in a couple of weeks will be part time after the 9 weeks of training. After the training I will give my availability to workforce and they will give me my schedule. The hours will depend on the business needs, so they will fluctuate, and it is a 24/7 operation, but I won't be booked past 11pm. The nice thing is any hours worked after 9pm have a $1.10 per hour shift premium.

What do you do at your job? I am going to get another caregiver job but don't want to go house to house anymore, I am looking at the independent and assisted living homes and nights are what I am going to need to work there.

I wont survive a week in such a schedule. So kudos to you for surviving that. Your new schedule will be good for your health. My work schedule is good the regular 8-5 . No one works after that except maybe the guards or the disaster people during calamities and those on overtime.

Thanks. Although some people claim to like it, it jut seems like it takes a toll on the body. At least for me.
