"Long in the tooth" is an old phrase and it has to do with old age. Animal's ages can be discerned by the length of their teeth. Especially in horses whose gums receed as they age so their teeth look longer. Could this be a way to describe vampires? For instance: "That pale fellow over there with the red eyes looks rather long in the tooth."

@celticeagle That saying always puzzled me because I thought teeth would become worn down with age and so would gat shorter. I usually get the wrong end of much sticks - unless I’ve missed the meaning of that saying too.

Up to a certain point a horses teeth do get longer. If they live into their teens and later then the teeth will start getting shorter. The teeth also slowy angle forward over time which can help judge the age too. But at one time long in the tooth also referred to an older horse. The life expectancy has been getting longer for them with improvements in care. I had one live to be around 35 and just lost one earlier this year that was 28 to 30

My cat Sid had two of the sharpest looking fangs that in this photo he looks like a vampire. Unfortunately a long time ago he lost one fang and now just has one which still looks sharp.
